Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by conflict, oppression or natural disaster.
1. In fiscal year 2008, the IRC reports that it gave over 1.8 million people access to clean water and sanitation, trained more than 10,000 educators and supported schools attended by 540,000 children, over half of them girls.
2. Also in 2008, the IRC reports that the IRC's doctors, nurses and community health workers served over 11.6 million people with primary and reproductive health care and reached some 7 million people with health education and HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The IRC counseled and cared for nearly 17,000 survivors of sexual violence and educated over 460,000 men, women and children in ways to prevent sexual violence.
3. In the United States, the IRC helped resettle over 9,000 newly arrived refugees and provided services to 28,000 refugees, asylees and victims of human trafficking.
Objectives for the 2009 fiscal year:
1. Maintain Middle East programs for Iraqi refugees and internally displaced people and advocate on their behalf in the United States and internationally.
2. Ensure quality services for new refugee arrivals in the United States and seek improvement in government programs and funding for them.
3. Continue major relief and development programs worldwide, including, among others, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
