What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Our programs include:
Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation: The Way of Awareness: This six week course is offered five times a year and includes an introduction to the intention behind mindfulness mediation practice, an introduction to specific meditation techniques, instructions for working with common obstacles, an overview of the practices of loving-kindness, and a discussion on how mindfulness can be part of one's daily life.
Buddhist Studies Program: This program is designed for experienced meditation practitioners to deepen understanding through the study and application of the teachings of the Buddha and includes dharma talks, small group discussions, and guided sitting time. Participants are expected to use the content of the class as a focus for their daily meditation practice. There are five courses offered a year, each meeting every week for eight weeks.
Weekly Sitting Groups: The weekly sitting groups are designed to be a cornerstone for one's home meditation practice and provide on-going instruction and teachings that help illuminate the simple but very challenging practice of mindfulness. These groups are available on a drop-in basis for both experienced and beginning meditators.
Open Meditation Sessions: Open meditations are available on a drop-in basis for anyone wishing to practice silent sitting or walking meditation. People can for as many 30-minute periods as they would like, arriving and departing with the bells which are rung every half hour.
Metta Practice Group: This monthly practice group is for people interested in developing the heart by training in the four divine abodes of loving-kindness (metta), compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity. Each session includes instruction, a guided meditation, a short talk, and time for questions and discussion.
Retreat Practice: Retreating from the distractions of daily life is an essential part of the path of awakening. Retreats include sitting and walking meditations, guided movement, talks on spiritual practice and time for questions and discussion. The yearly schedule of retreats includes: a half day and full day retreat every month, three week-end residential retreats, and a four-day nonresidential holiday retreat.
Sutta Study Group: This monthly study group is intended for people who are leaders or volunteers at Common Ground and who have been maintaining a daily meditation practice for over five years and who have done substantial retreat practice. Sutta's are the original teachings of the Buddha. The study process includes reading the sutta(s), reflecting and sharing understanding and application, and focused discussion.
Mindfulness and the Twelve Steps: This ongoing program is for those seeking spiritual development by practicing the principles of the Twelve Steps and the Buddha's teachings in everyday life. This program supplements recovery and is designed to reveal to us that consistent mindfulness practice is vital to spiritual progress.
Family Practice Program: The Family Program meets monthly, learning about mindfulness, how to develop and practice it in our lives and homes. Sessions address Buddhist teachings using songs, games, guided meditations and hands-on activities. Each gathering concludes with a potluck. The program is designed for children who are approximately 5 - 10 years old and the people who care about them.
Mindful Parenting: Practice and Discussion Group: This program is for parents of young children who wish to connect with other parents and introduce their children (infants to age 5) into the community. The group shares experiences and ideas about practicing skillful parenting in their lives. Children play separately for the first hour, then join the parent community for quiet time, songs and play.
Practice Meetings: People who are interested can meet with the Guiding Teacher for 30 ? 45 minutes to discuss meditation practice.
