Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs
A decent home for all
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
There is a staggering need for affordable housing here in Chicagoland – not only in the City and Cook County, but throughout the collar counties, as well. There are still not enough affordable homes throughout our region for all the hardworking people who earn too much for public assistance programs but not enough for traditional mortgages or some rental properties. With our regional statistics putting Metro Chicago among one of the most severely housing-burdened areas in the country, we have a great opportunity to tap our generous community’s philanthropic priority of funding basic human needs and fueling Habitat for Humanity’s tried-and-true model of reversing the cycle of poverty. After all, everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
• Happier Children: A 2013 Boston College/Tufts University study appearing in Developmental Psychology found, “When families lived in poor quality housing, parents experienced more psychological stress, and children showed elevated levels of emotional problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety, and elevated behavior problems, like aggression, lying, and deceitfulness.
• Stronger Families: Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas notes in its 2009 A Social Enterprise report, “The purchase of a Habitat home under favorable, affordable mortgage terms allows partner families to sustain their decent living conditions, build equity over time and have more financial resources to provide the other necessities of family life, such as healthcare options, clothing, education and quality of life purchases.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Moving forward, Habitat for Humanity in the Chicago region has significant goals as we work towards our vision of a “world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Collectively, we are striving to build thousands of housing solutions for individuals in need compared to the hundreds we serve now. In the City of Chicago, the affiliate has ambitious goals to significantly increase not only families served, but also focus on revitalizing the neighborhoods it serves, through strategic partnerships with other housing providers and community organizations – strengthening the community unit as well as the family unit.
This community and neighborhood focus is critical to addressing the systemic problems of poverty, crime and hopelessness in the City of Chicago as well as beyond. Overall, our goal is to serve 2,020 individuals by 2020.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Habitat for Humanity is strong and empowering in reach; Chicagoland has broad shoulders. And the hundreds of thousands of our neighbors living in poverty housing need our help more than ever.
Everyone deserves a decent place to live. Every parent wants a better future for their family. Every child deserves to live in stability. Every voice can advocate and help more families build strength, stability and independence. We work to realize that dream, but can’t do what we do without your help.
With your support, Habitat for Humanity in the Chicago region will offer an impact as broad as our shoulders and our community’s philanthropic spirit: Building more homes, serving more individuals, engaging more volunteers, creating more affordable housing advocates.
We are confident we can reach our goal of serving 2,000 individuals each year by 2018, with continued growth towards 4,000 individuals served on an annual basis.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Habitat for Humanity is one of the strongest nonprofit organizations in the world. Its volunteer-based model of providing a “hand up, not a hand out” to individuals in search of affordable housing has been undeniably proven to benefit families, neighborhoods and local economies.
Habitat for Humanity in Chicagoland works to align our region’s strong and proud culture of philanthropy with the disproportionate need for affordable housing in our region. Together, and with your support, we aim to help significantly more individuals find a decent place to live: 2,000 individuals per year region-wide by 2018.
