What we aim to solve
Every community needs a hospital that can provide the finest care to all residents. Regions is that hospital in the Twin Cities East Metro and western Wisconsin, providing high quality emergency, trauma and specialty care and offering a high level of charity care for those who cannot afford their medical bills. To offer such services, we need the help of charitable contributions.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Fundraising focus areas
Our ability to pay for special programs, equipment and facilities are affected by our high level of charity care and cuts to government programs that assist vulnerable populations, making charitable contributions crucial. The following are several areas of focus for fundraising in the coming years:
REGIONS HOSPITAL FAMILY BIRTH CENTER
The new facility, scheduled to open in 2020, will combine the latest in medical knowledge with cultural insights derived from extensive community input. The center will provide exceptional care and a superior experience to newborns, parents and extended families. It will increase our ability to serve the community both now and well into the future. With your support, we are helping new families from all economic and cultural backgrounds get off to a healthy start.
NEUROSCIENCE
At the new HealthPartners Neuroscience Center, we are leading the field by integrating clinical care, rehabilitation services and research. Contributions help educate patients and the community about injury prevention and disease management; support the well-being of patients and families living with dementias like Alzheimer’s; and advance research with innovative treatments and cures to many neurological conditions.
PAIN AND OPIOIDS
We have set aggressive goals to address the opioid epidemic to ensure our patients and the community can recapture their lives and thrive. Help us educate patients and providers about the dangers of opioids, offer alternatives to treating pain without opioids, and leverage our ability to research innovative strategies to end this national crisis.
CANCER CARE AND RESEARCH
Your contribution can help us expand our clinical trials program to ensure patients have access to the best new cancer treatments. Contributions from donors provide holistic support and education to patients and families so they can learn about their illness, manage treatment and live well. Your donations also help us expand our care space and research labs to meet the needs of our patients and remove barriers to care for community members who need it most.
MENTAL HEALTH
With your help, we're changing the way people look at mental health care. Our mental health programs focus on best health outcomes, improving access and reducing stigma. Donations contribute to the introduction of new therapies, like sensory integration, that improve health outcomes. Contributions allow us to enhance access to care through Afton Place, an intensive residential mental health treatment center, and help fight the stigma of mental illness through the Make It OK campaign.
ER AND TRAUMA CARE
We're leaders in emergency care and the only Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center in the Twin Cities East Metro and western Wisconsin. Your contributions support our nationally recognized Burn Center and ER, train the next generation of emergency medicine physicians, and extend care into the community through our geriatric fracture and community paramedic programs.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Regions Hospital is proud to be the largest provider of charity care in the Twin Cities East Metro and the second largest in Minnesota. Over the last 15 years we have also become known for our outstanding specialty care. People across the region recognize the outstanding quality of our care and their experience as patients and visitors. Regions Hospital and its parent organization, HealthPartners, have also been recognized for the affordability of their care. Regions is honored to be the only hospital in Minnesota to be named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades for four years in a row (2016-2019).
It is rare for a hospital to be both a charity care and specialty care leader, but we can do it with the help of our dedicated professionals and generous donors.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Regions Hospital Foundation partners with the community to raise money that helps fund special programs, facilities and equipment.
In addition to its work with Regions Hospital, the foundation raises charitable contributions for other clinics and departments within HealthPartners. Regions Hospital and Regions Hospital Foundation are separate 501(c)(3) organizations and are part of HealthPartners, itself a 501(c)(3) consumer-governed health care organization. As an integrated health care organization, HealthPartners’ services touch all sectors of the health care system, from primary care and specialty care services, to health plan financing and administration, to medical research and education. Because of our comprehensive approach to health care, charitable contributions help us create a system that meets the Triple Aim: exceptional outcomes for patients and a great experience for patients and families, all at an affordable price. In this way, we can become a model for the rest of the nation.
Regions Hospital also seeks the insights of community members to better meet the needs of all residents. This includes working with local community organizations to provide the most culturally appropriate care to its diverse patient population.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Regions offers a full range of high quality medical services, and we have won local, state and national awards for the quality of our care. Our special programs include heart care, neuroscience, surgery, orthopedics, digestive care, cancer care, mental health care, birthing labor and delivery, burn care, and emergency and trauma care. The hospital has 470 staffed beds and in 2018 experienced 27,551 admissions and 87,594 Emergency Center visits. Regions primarily serves the East Metro, eastern Minnesota, and western Wisconsin.
Regions is the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and, in partnership with Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center serving the Twin Cities East Metro and western Wisconsin. Both verifications are given by the American College of Surgeons and together confirm that Regions can offer the very best trauma care, no matter the age of the patient.
Operating a Level I Trauma Center requires state-of-the-art equipment and technology and a staff with skills and knowledge that are sharp and current. We have medical specialists at the hospital — not just on call — 24 hours a day. Being a Level I Trauma Center requires a level of specialty care that helped lead to us becoming a specialty care leader. Being a Level I Trauma Center also means having transportation such as the Life Link helicopter to move critically injured patients quickly and safely.
Regions is the East Metro’s emergency care leader. Our Emergency Center normally experiences 50 percent more visits than any other emergency room in its service area, and the ER plays a central role in the community’s preparation for large-scale disasters. In addition, our nationally-renowned Burn Center provides comprehensive, state-of-the art burn care and treatment to adults and children of the five-state area.
Regions is the largest provider of charity care in the East Metro by far and the third largest in Minnesota. In 2018, Regions provided $17.8 million in charity care costs to care for 53,462 patients that had no insurance or could not afford their care. Charity care equaled 2.3 percent of the hospital’s total operating expenses.
