Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
In 2011, over 200,000 volunteers nationwide packaged 40 million meals that were distributed to food shelves in their local communities and to starving children throughout the world. The organization's "rice-soy casserole", a combination of fortified soy, six dehydrated vegetables, flavoring containing twenty–one vitamins and minerals, and rice is acceptable to all cultures around the world, easy to transport, store and prepare. Each package is prepared by adding the contents to boiling water and cooking for twenty minutes. It provides six servings of food that contains all the nutrients necessary to reverse the starvation process and restore a child to health- FOR ONLY 23¢ PER MEAL. The Kids Against Hunger meals are nutritionally far superior to the rice and beans provided by many food aid organizations.

High-nutrition meal packaging by volunteers

$814,558

-
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Program Description:
Kids
Against Hunger’s food packaging program engages community volunteers as they
assemble Kids Against Hunger’s high-nutrition meals through a simple, manual
packaging process. The program consists of permanent facilities in New Hope (MN),
Mankato (MN), and Orlando (FL), a mobile packaging operation based out of New Hope,
and over 90 independent satellite locations across the U.S. and Canada. The
organization’s permanent food packaging locations invite community groups and individuals
to participate in Kids Against Hunger’s hunger relief efforts by signing up for
monthly or one-time packaging sessions. When becoming a part of the packaging
process, volunteers learn and reaffirm the importance of looking beyond
themselves, towards serving the
needs of others. Kids Against Hunger’s mobile packaging department offers
options to organizations to host their own food packaging events anywhere in
the U.S. at a program cost of only $0.23 per meal - allowing Kids Against Hunger
to increase organizational visibility on a national level and to raise
awareness of hunger issues while also bringing satisfaction and deep engagement
to the volunteers who package the food.

Program Description:
Kids Against Hunger’s satellite
development program prospects for and opens food packaging satellite operations
and supports a network of existing food packaging satellites that extends
across the U.S. and Canada. Those satellites establish relationships with local
corporate, civic, school groups - including Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs - and many
churches of widely varying denominations and faiths. Kids Against Hunger
believes that the best way to engage the largest number of people is through a
decentralized, locally-based network of food packaging satellites that are
active in their community. Each satellite is licensed by Headquarters to use
Kids Against Hunger's name, branding, and proprietary food formula. This controlled growth strategy allows the organization to
continuously expand its food packaging capacity and volunteer involvement. Kids
Against Hunger's approach also engages and empowers people to realize that they
can make a difference in solving the worldwide problem of starvation.

Program Description:
Kids Against Hunger’s food distribution program works closely with
its non-governmental distribution partners (NGOs) operating in foreign
countries to manage the distribution of Kids Against Hunger’s meals. This is
accomplished by seeking out NGOs that have an established ongoing feeding
program overseas. The distribution partners selected by Kids Against Hunger
must be able to successfully transport the food to the children and distribute
it properly - along with a variety of other services provided for the families
being served. The first priority when making food available is always to provide food to STARVING children and their
families – regardless of race, gender, or faith. The second priority is to feed
those individuals who are categorized as HUNGRY. Only when the most basic need
of nutrition is met - leading to an improvement in the overall well-being of the
recipients - are Kids Against Hunger's feeding partners able to assist those
people in finding ways to become self-sufficient.
