Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Under the banner, "Justice for the African World," TransAfrica Forum is charting new directions, addressing emerging priorities, building strategic alliances and spearheading cooperative opportunities around the issues facing the African World and the broader global peace and justice movement. KEY PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES One Standard!: is TransAfrica Forum?s campaign for a fair and just U.S. policy toward Haitian refugees. The Justice for South Africa/Pay the Debt Campaign: supports efforts in South Africa to pursue and demand accountability from multi-national banks and corporations that collaborated with the apartheid regime in suppressing African majority rule. Campaign to Abolish Sweatshops: concerned about the growth of sweatshops in the African World, the Campaign focuses on people before profits. Globalization Monitor: designed to influence the discussion around reparations for Africa, the Globalization Monitor is an authoritative source of analysis on international financial institutions, multi-national corporations and their impact on the African World. Southern African Trade Union Leadership Academy (SATULA): The labor movements in the African world have been and can continue to be major forces in the battle for democracy and economic justice. This was true in the anti-colonial struggle, and it is just as true in the current struggle against global injustice. The academy promotes labor education and leadership development for the various federations which are components of Southern African Trade Union Coordinating Committee (SATUCC), the body coordinating labor federations in Southern Africa. TransAfrica Forum?s role is to serve as the facilitator and coordinator of the project, working in tandem with SATUCC to bring together resources and institutions in Southern Africa to create the academy. As a "virtual" leadership academy, SATULA is a collaborative training effort. TransAfrica Student Network: recognizing the importance of activism among young people, TransAfrica has launched a student/youth initiative with a fulltime organizer who is working with campus leaders across the country to launch special campaigns and activities. Scholars Council: through policy briefs, position papers, and roundtable discussions, the Scholars Council elucidates critical African World perspectives on health, education, labor, women, economics and sustainable development. Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. Foreign Policy Library Seminars and Public Forums: from the DC/Caribbean Heritage Film Series to lectures, regional forums and educational events, the Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. Foreign Policy Library provides opportunities for greater awareness of the forces shaping the African World today. Fact-Finding Missions: TransAfrica Forum has led fact-finding missions to South Africa, Haiti, Angola, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Dominica, Cuba, and the Western Sahara. All have resulted in altering the manner in which the American public views - and the American government implements - policy towards Africa and the Caribbean. Internship Program: The Intern Program provides students with an opportunity to study the actual formulation and implementation of foreign policy from unique vantage points.
