What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
LAMB is a small school with a big dream of fostering competent, responsible, adaptive citizens who are life long learners and problem solvers. LAMB is based on the Montessori' concept that the classroom or prepared environment can be designed to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child.
Montessori is a comprehensive educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori almost a century ago. Its an experiential learning approach based on observation of children's natural learning tendencies as they unfold in prepared environments of multi-age groups. The dual language immersion component of LAMB's programming addresses the needs of English language learners (Spanish language dominant) and English language dominant children by utilizing both Spanish and English with the goal of bi-literacy for all students.
In School Year 2005-2006, LAMB has 84 multicultural students (and their families) in three classrooms of pre-school through kindergarten and one first grade class with two instructors per classroom who teach, in English and Spanish, utilizing Montessori curricula core academic and non-academic subject matter.
In the classroom, learning materials are arranged invitingly on low, open shelves. Students may choose whatever materials they would like to use and may work for as long as the material holds their interest. The materials themselves invite activity. There are bright arrays of solid geometric forms, knobbed puzzle maps, colored beads, and various specialized rods and blocks.
In our 3 to 6 year old classrooms, for example, a three-year-old may be washing clothes by hand while a four-year-old nearby is composing words and phrases with letters known as the movable alphabet, and a five-year-old is performing multiplication using a specially designed set of beads. This year, LAMB has one elementary classroom, in it a small group of children may be using a timeline to learn about extinct animals while another child chooses to work alone, analyzing a poem using special grammar symbols.
Each material in our Montessori classroom isolates one quality. For example, the material known as the pink tower is made up of ten pink cubes of varying sizes. The preschool-aged child constructs a tower with the largest cube on the bottom and the smallest on togeometry materials for form, and so on. Moreover, the materials are self-correcting. As the child's exploration continues, the materials interrelate and build upon each other.
Students attend class from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 student progress and attendance, board and independent evaluation, LAMB has met and/or exceeded its goals since its inception two years ago.
LAMB's most pressing issue is renovation of a permanent home. LAMB has temporary space (one year) at Bunker Hill Elementary School until its permanent home, located at 1375 Missouri Avenue, NW, can be renovated. LAMB will restore the existing site and add a new wing to the historically significant Military Road School, an 8,940 square foot facility for a total new building footprint of approximately 20,000 square feet.
