Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
NPCA and its 750,000 supporters make great things happen for our national parks. Here are a few examples of how we created positive change in 2011:Thanks to NPCA's persistent advocacy the biggest dam removal project in U.S. history is now underway in Olympic National Park, restoring the Elwha River and soon welcoming the return of spawning salmon. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board denied the application for a license to open a casino near Gettysburg National Military Park. The Tennessee Valley Authority agreed to phase out 18 units at coal-fired power plants and install modern pollution controls on three dozen additional units, which will improve air quality in parks like Great Smoky Mountains and Mammoth Cave.Secretary of the Interior Salazar announced the protection of 1 million acres around Grand Canyon National Park banning uranium mining for the next 20 years. Using the Antiquities Act, President Barack Obama, proclaimed Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, our country's newest national monument. NPCA secured an agreement from the EPA to ensure that all 50 states reduce air pollution in our national parks. With pressure from more than 30,000 activists, Walmart abandoned plans to build a superstore on a privately owned portion of the Wilderness Battlefield adjacent to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Representatives from local tribes, state and federal agencies finalized an agreement allowing bison from Yellowstone National Park to freely migrate onto 75,000 acres of additional habitat north of the park. After years of advocacy by NPCA supporters, the U.S. Supreme Court decided it would not hear an appeal to develop the nation's largest garbage dump next to Joshua Tree National Park, ending the appeals process and protecting California's fragile desert landscape. We hope you’ll join with us to ensure the national parks continue to receive the funding and protections they need. We can’t do it without you!

Program Description:
The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) works on the ground, in and around our national parks, conducting research, and working hand-in-hand with park staff, community leaders, park advocates, and state and federal legislators to ensure that our national parks and monuments are welcoming and well funded, well managed and well protected for generations today and tomorrow. NPCA can be found mobilizing citizens and joining with communities, businesses, landowners, and activists; promoting legislation that strengthens protections for the national parks, advocating for the funding our national parks and monuments need, establishing or enforcing legal safeguards through the courts; and doing everything we can to protect our national parks for years to come. NPCA was established in 1919 to be an independent voice for our National Park System. One of our founders, Stephen Mather, was also the first director of the National Park Service, which was established in 1916. Mather and others saw a clear need for an independent voice outside of the federal government to protect the nation’s parklands. For more than 90 years, the nonpartisan, independent, membership organization has been the leading voice of the American people in protecting and enhancing the park system’s superlative examples of America’s natural, cultural, and historic heritage. NPCA and its more than 750,000 members and supporters are committed to preserving the most diverse park system in the world for us now and for those who will come after.
