Profile:

Dana received his Ph.D. in clinical counseling in conjunction with Emory University and Christian Bible Seminary, and was the Hemophilia Treatment Center clinical counselor and faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia Hospitals from 1988-1995. Dr. Kuhn has helped to create innovative well-rounded Patient Assistance Programs for companies servicing the chronically ill communities. State Special Health Care Needs Programs have utilized these innovative well-rounded programs developed by PSI and have experienced astounding cost-avoidances and cost-savings for their programs. Companies have utilized PSI's programs and have realized increased product usage, decreased use in compassionate product, and an altruistic approach in helping those persons suffering from expensive chronic illnesses. Dana has led the Patient Services organization in obtaining a positive Office of Inspector General's Opinion in 2002 and the inclusion in the Code of Federal Regulation of allowing non-profit organizations to satisfy the TrOOP (true out-of-pocket) utilizing cash donations from pharmaceutical corporations in June 2004.

Program Description:

PSI subsidizes the high costs of health insurance premiums so patients can afford life saving treatment.

Program Long-Term Success:

The best confirmation of PSI’s true worth can be found in the thousands of patients it has helped. In addition: •Support of PSI will keep families employed and off the Medicaid rolls. •Support of PSI will provide the means whereby chronically ill people will be able to obtain the needed—and often life-saving—medicines that result in an improved quality of life. •Support of PSI will keep families from being “penalized” for having a family member with such a medical condition. •Support of PSI will produce the means whereby 50-70% of its recipients are given the opportunity to get “back on their feet.” •Support of PSI will help save families from financial bankruptcy and often (in the case of the chronically ill) from premature death. Finally, support of PSI will “help make the gift of health a lifetime benefit.®”

The most accurate method of evaluating the results of funding to PSI is tracking increases and improvements in certain elements of its outcome data: •Total patients served •Average/total months assisted •Individual lives/families impacted through insurance •Xost of premiums (expressed as a percentage of total cost of medical services) that patients would be without, if no PSI assistance were received •Average monthly premiums •Percentage of patients transitioned to new, viable health insurance options (PSI does consider Insurance Case Management upon request from the donor)
