Mission Statement
NASAA's mission is to strengthen state arts agencies. NASAA represents their individual and collective interests, empowers their work through knowledge, and advances the arts as an essential public benefit.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
In 2012 NASAA:1.Mobilized
member advocacy to sustain support in Congress for the National Endowment for
the Arts (NEA) and to address states’ interests in the NEA's FY2012 budget. All
positions NASAA advanced were successfully
reflected in the FY2013 NEA budget proposal.
2.Developed
the new Agenda to
Advance Learning in the Arts policy
framework, which articulates the resources and relationships that best position
state arts agencies to advance arts education nationwide. This agenda guides NASAA's
work with the NEA, the Arts Education Partnership, other federal agencies, and state
arts agencies. 3.Collaborated
with the National Governors Association (NGA) and the NEA to produce New Engines of Growth: Five Roles for Arts, Culture
and Design. The report, featuring many state arts agencies, speaks
persuasively about the arts as an economic development and work-force asset for
states. 4.Convened nearly
400 people for Assembly
2012 in Washington, DC. Conference learning
sessions addressed cultural advocacy and policy, creative place-making,
economic development, data-driven decision-making, and new technologies. Denyce
Graves, Natasha Trethewey and 47 other artists showcased the creative vitality
of the nation's capital. 5.Highlighted all
state arts agency grant investments in the 2012 Grant
Making and Funding report. Updated fact sheets on
support for arts education, local arts agencies, individual
artists and general
operating support summarized how state arts agencies
invest in these areas. A complete grant-making
almanac gave a 10-year overview of grant
trends.6.Fulfilled
357 information requests from members needing data, programmatic information
and advice.Also provided customized
technical assistance, including advocacy training, customized surveys,
facilitated strategic planning retreats, and customized benchmarking reports or
geographic analyses. These reports illustrate the reach and impact of public
funding and support state arts agencies' planning and evaluation efforts. See FY2012
