Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to provide essential survival support for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in a spirit of love, hospitality and generosity. We work to help our guests get from one day to the next by meeting their immediate survival needs, and to support their needs for security and trusting relationships to help them reach the hopeful tomorrow when homelessness is behind them for good.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our programs meet each guest as they are, develop trusting personal relationships to learn about their needs, and respond in kind. All of our sixteen programs have developed from learning about these needs directly from our guests. We also work to provide services that are not readily available in our community, such as legal and mental health support.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our sixteen survival services programs welcome nearly 1,000 homeless men, women, and children every day. For many of our guests, we are their only source of reliable survival support.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Last year our program accomplishments include:
Anneke's Haven: 3,361 pets found care and comfort at Anneke's Haven in 2018, and guests with pets received 1,419 bags of pet food during the year's pet food giveaway.
Brother Martin's Ministry: 4,189 people volunteered their time and services to Loaves & Fishes in 2018, volunteering hours equivalent to forty-one full-time, year-round staff.
Community Service: In 2018, 413 defendant cases were completed and provided 7,512 hours of outside work, including trash pickup, sweeping, raking, dining room service, kitchen cleaning, and safety monitor positions. Additionally, our staff and volunteers fulfilled 3,324 instances of legal advice and 431 warrant checks.
Dining Room: Over eight million meals have been served to the poor and homeless since 1983. We served 141,286 meals alone in 2018, helping keep 12,733 guests fed and well-nourished throughout the year.
Friendship Park: Friendship Park provided guests with 62,896 healthy breakfasts meals, 163,200 cups of coffee, 5,200 hygiene kits, 477 sleeping bags, and 1,516 blankets in 2018. Our library's full-service reading room offered books, periodicals, and studying or writing space for 37,922 visits in the same year.
Genesis: 961 guests received 4,438 free counseling sessions, assessments, referrals, and outreach resources in 2018.
Jail Visitation: Staff and volunteers made 2,028 visits to inmates in Sacramento County Jail in 2018. During that time over 1,500 letters were written to or on behalf of these inmates. Guests in transition from jail to society received 320 personal toiletry kits with backpacks and sweatshirts, and 713 bus passes.
Maryhouse: In 2018 Mayhouse provided 4,429 guests with 27,737 breakfasts, 5,059 diaper packs, 10,077 showers with toiletries, 5,399 menstrual or incontinence supply packs, and 18,2015 hygiene kits. 1,792 of those guests were new to Maryhouse's program and services.
Mustard Seed School: Mustard Seed has provided over 6,000 individual children with emergency schooling since it opened in February of 1989, and is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. In 2018 we welcomed and provided instruction for 262 students, for an average of four school weeks per student. We arranged sixty-two medical and dental visits, and twelve vision care services, for students in our care who would otherwise not have health care access. Our outreach staff helped transition 104 of our students into public school.
Sister Nora's Place: Sister Nora's Place provided long term shelter for twenty-seven chronically homeless women in 2018, and helped two residents successfully transition into permanent housing.
Wash House: In 2018 the Wash House offered 27,611 hot showers and shaves with toiletries, and washed 1,182 loads of laundry for men who would not otherwise have access to these simple hygiene and sanitation services.
