Mrs. Shannon Evers

Term:

Since Sept 2012

Profile:

Shannon Evers joined Girl Scouts - Western Oklahoma as Chief Executive Officer in September, 2012. Shannon brings a wide scope of experience to this position. She has served as Chief Development Officer for the past four years with Girl Scouts - Western Washington. Prior to that, Shannon served as the Development and Marketing Director of Girl Scouts Columbia River in Portland, Oregon, and the Associate Director of Development for the YWCA of Greater Portland, Oregon. Shannon is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She holds a Certified Fund Raising Executive Certificate and belongs to the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She holds a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout may achieve, and is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of the USA. Shannon believes strongly in what the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience has to offer girls in every community. ""I believe in the importance of Girl Scouting and want to give every girl the opportunity to become all they can achieve through Girl Scouts. I am eager to make a difference in the lives of girls and the volunteers who mentor them by promoting an open exchange of ideas and encouraging people to use their various talents and abilities to take this organization to the next level."

Leadership Statement:

Every day we are blessed with the fortune of being inspired by the girls that we serve in Girl Scouts. Their ability to meet the challenges that so many of them face with courage, confidence and character, while making the world a better place, is an achievement worth celebrating. Together we have created more resources to better serve girls in western Oklahoma. We appreciate the support of our volunteers, United Way partners, and donors who have made it possible for us to provide strong, impactful programs for girls. We are proud of our partnerships with schools to create more in-school programs where there is a need, working with after-school and out-of-school programs to help provide girl-led programming. We continue to reach girls in public housing, juvenile detention, alternative schools, along with many outdoor programs at community centers and our own camps. We are excited to be a leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs and to promote access to STEM programming for girls interested in careers in those fields. We are very excited to be creating a new leadership center in Oklahoma City to be a home and resource to all of our girls and volunteers from all 39 counties. It's a place for girls, designed by girls, where they can connect with one another and their mentors, receive programming and training, access resources, and be proud of the organization they have built. We have received a wonderful response from our community in support of our capital campaign that is making all of this possible, and we appreciate having the opportunity to connect in a new and better way with our volunteers and girls. As we begin our next century of Girl Scouting, it is a time for us to honor the legacy we have been given and look forward to all the opportunities we can provide to girls in the future. It is a really exciting time to be a Girl Scout. Thank you for giving generously to girls and supporting them as they find their Leadership voice through Girl Scouting.

Program Description:

Girl Scouts serves girls ages 5-17 with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). All Girl Scout program activities are part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. It begins with a definition of leadership that girls understand and believe in: a leader, girls say, is defined not only by the qualities and skills one has, but also by how those qualities and skills are used to make a difference in the world. The GSLE has three "keys" to leadership: Discover: Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.Connect: Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.Take Action: Girls act to make the world a better place. All experiences in Girl Scouting incorporate these three keys. Experiences are also, girl led, and encourage learning by doing and cooperative learning. Girls can experience Girl Scouting through any one, all, or some of the six Pathways: Events, Series, Travel, Troops, Camp, and Virtual.

Category:

Population Served:
Females, all ages or age unspecified
Youth/Adolescents only (14 - 19 years)
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Girl Scouts serves girls who are facing some of life's most challenging and frightening outcomes. Girl Scouts in Detention Centers is a program created collaboratively through the Department of Juvenile Affairs and Girl Scouts to address the rising number of girls in detention, where appropriate programming is extremely limited. In Oklahoma, a state that imprisons more women per capita than any other place in the world, this is a startling but real fact of life for many of our Oklahoma girls. We serve these programs weekly at the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Detention Center in Tecumseh and the Berry House in Oklahoma County with programs on self esteem, life skills, STEM and much more.

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in order to give girls opportunities they didn't have previously, and in 1912 camping was an activity that wasn't acceptable for girls. In the 100 years since its founding, Girl Scouts has made a tradition out of camping. Today we continue to honor the tradition of camping while leveraging technology and innovation. We offer day and summer camps to girls during school breaks that allow them to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), outdoor skills, horseback riding, and so much more. For many girls, this is their first try at independence, and the skills they learn, the bonds they form, will last them a lifetime.
