Rhythmically Speaking
sparking vibrancy and connectedness through performance works inspired by jazz and American social dance ideas
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We aim to engage people in staged jazz and American social dance forms as a way to celebrate their histories while nurturing innovation within these aesthetics that foster individual and communal expression.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Summer Show
in August 2018, Rhythmically Speaking celebrated 10 years of producing an annual summer production featuring work by RS Artistic Director Erinn Liebhard, local Twin Cities choreographers and visiting artists from other parts of the country. We've continued this strong history of supporting and presenting lively new and restaged choreographic works inspired by American social dance ideas. We support innovative Twin Cities and national choreographers, as well as local dancers, at various stages in their careers, and with a submission process that is open to the public each year, we’re always thrilled to discover the breadth of what people are creating. We are proud to engage an ongoing conversation around what constitutes jazz and American social dance on stage.
Winter Show
In the Winter each year, Rhythmically Speaking produces a show of all new work by Artistic Director Erinn Liebhard. With her unique approach focusing in the jazz roots of groove, interaction and improvisation, Liebhard is considered an innovator in jazz dance education and choreography, and RS is proud to support her creative development that in turn sparks vibrancy and connectedness among involved artists and our audiences. An example of a recent work for this program is "CHILL: The Entire Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack, Played Live and Danced!"
Workshops and Events
Beyond our two annual production slots per year, Rhythmically Speaking also conducts educational and choreographic residencies, workshops and events as needs and interests arise. A recent example of this programming is our work with Dance Barn (Battle Lake, MN) teaching, setting new choreographic work and performing shows in their community as collaborators with their summer youth camp.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Producing two productions a year, one focusing on the choreography of Artistic Director Erinn Liebhard and the other featuring multiple choreographers, to fulfill our mission/ address the 'problem' referenced above.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Continuing to better our already strong organizational and financial work to further our development and marketing efforts that support the creation and sharing of inspired artistic product/s.
Please note that our annual budget has increased drastically since FY17, the 990 and financial information currently available on this site. Our FY19 budget was $41,000.00.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We tout 10+ years of experience producing original staged work in jazz and American social forms, featuring artists local to the Twin Cities (MN) and out-of-town guests who come to share their work with our community. RS Artistic Director Erinn Liebhard applies her experience to all aspects of running this organization, from organizational and financial upkeep to development and marketing efforts to artistic generation and support. Learn more about her at erinnliebhard.com.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have gone from being a fledging production put together with love and the lint in our pockets to a fully-fledged 501(c)3 organization with strong development and marketing efforts to support our programming in a niche area of the dance arts. We are proud of the high quality of artists and performers our past projects have attracted, and continue to raise the bar on not only the quality of the art we produce, but the amount we are able to compensate the artists we engage.
