What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
GED/TASC/HSE Prep
Grace Outreach provides a rigorous education tailored to each individual, designed to help her earn an Equivalency Diploma as soon as possible. (note: in New York State high school equivalency is demonstrated via the TASC exam). We
begin with an assessment of each student’s basic reading, math and writing skills. Student then receive daily
nstruction in math, reading and writing, science and social studies. A student can take from three to six months to complete study for the HS equivalency exam, depending on
her academic level and ability to attend consistently. Grace Outreach is unique in its individualized approach to the TASC/equivalency preparation. In most programs, a single teacher has students with vastly different skills and
abilities preparing for the exam together in one classroom. The Grace Outreach model (utilizing full time teachers instructing in 1 subject area) has yielded vastly improved results over this traditional
approach.
College Prep
Currently, the College Prep Program works with GO students who recently completed their high school equivalency. This program enables them to quickly build skills, work habits and necessary mind sets for further academic study. Recognizing that academic gaps and placement in remedial college courses are barriers to successful program completion, the GO program emphasizes college-level instruction in reading, writing, math and research. Courses and instruction are designed to move students away from remediation and into college credit courses. As research suggests, this will greatly improve the probability that they will persist toward college graduation.
Career Prep
The second phase of the program begins immediately after each student obtains her High School Equivalency diploma, capitalizing on her feeling of success. Leading up to and following each student’s achievement, Grace Outreach provides guidance and support services to make a career/life plan, which often includes beginning and then completing college, or entering a quality, proven vocational training program with selected organizational partners.
The post-GED phase of our program focuses on a few key strategies which help our students enroll in, thrive, and complete college or vocational training, including:
a collaboratively-planned, individualized path that focuses on goals rather than obstacles;
practical assistance with preparing college applications and securing financial aid;
comprehensive academic support, including tutoring, study and time management skills (so that our students do not have to take the college remediation courses that eat up financial aid);
consistent follow-up and coaching with a trusted advisor and mentor; including identifying appropriate programs, career counseling, resume workshops and job skills training.
