HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We aim to change the way the world views, judges, and treats our most marginalized and demonized: the formerly incarcerated and gang-involved. By our daily work and commitment to the healing of the most demonized in a trusting, loving community, we will demonstrate to the world a new way forward.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Free Services
Homeboy Industries' services are free and open to the public, including: tattoo removal, legal services, GED prep, life skills and substance abuse classes, workforce development, support groups, and more.
Job Training
Homeboy’s re-entry employment model operates within a therapeutic community that works for foundational healing at the core. Through trauma-informed and evidence-based practices, Homeboy’s flagship 18-month re-entry program focuses on healing and job training so participants can discover their true selves and live healthy lives, contributing to the wellbeing of their communities and breaking cycles of intergenerational violence and poverty.
Over 250 men and women participate in Homeboy’s program annually. For individuals who are processing trauma, learning to relate to others, and rediscovering who they are, the path to job training begins with important but sometimes small steps of workforce readiness. Program participants gain work experience at Homeboy’s headquarters and social enterprises including Homegirl Café and Catering. Homeboy’s social enterprises allow us to create a therapeutic community at work, teaching job skills that lead to life-long careers, and in our case for people that society often deems unemployable.
Education
Our mission prioritizes supporting education and research to a new level, removing barriers to employment to help our underserved population maintain stable employment and economic livelihood.
Participants in Homeboy's flagship 18-month program are encouraged to pursue one of four educational pathways: foundational literacy, High School
diploma, GED preparation, or community college enrollment.
Clients under the age of 21 can complete their high school diploma at Homeboy's partner charter school which has an independent-study curriculum tailored to the needs of youth who have dropped out or been expelled from traditional schools.
Tattoo Removal
At Homeboy, laser tattoo removal is provided to individuals whether enrolled in the Homeboy program or community clients. This has proven to be a critical service for former gang members because the majority possesses visible tattoos – a physical obstacle that makes it difficult for them to obtain secure employment. We have found that the majority of our younger clients have not necessarily dropped out of school; instead, many were “pushed out” by the local district because of their tattoos. One of the most mentioned reasons among our clients for why they want to remove their tattoos is the hope of setting a good example for their children. The Tattoo Removal Program is often a “gateway” service for those who come to Homeboy; many seek only this service and end up learning of the other offerings, such as mental health, education and job development.
Often the first step in leaving gang life is to recognize that gang-related tattoos are unwelcome in the work place. At Homeboy, tattoo removal is a free service provided to trainees, community clients, and minors who have gang related or visible tattoos located on the hands, neck, or face.
Mental Health Services
Trauma-informed clinical services are available to all of our trainees. In addition to individual psychotherapy, the Mental Health Program offers substance abuse counseling; court-approved domestic violence classes; therapeutic dance; a psycho-educational “Baby and Me” group; and psychiatric evaluation and support. As demand for these services is high, “Homeboy Heals,” a cadre of volunteer licensed psychotherapists, provides additional capacity for counseling.
Legal Services
Homeboy's team of volunteer attorneys provides free consultations and referrals pertaining to many legal matters, especially criminal law, including bench warrants and post-conviction matters, immigration law, employment law and family law, addressing such issues as divorce, child custody and visitation, and child support. Petitions for dismissal or expungements are provided as a key service that reduce serious barriers to employment.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our overarching goal is to see individuals heal from trauma. The five key outcomes that we strive for as an organization are:
1) Reduced recidivism
2) Reduced substance abuse
3) Improved social connectedness
4) Improved housing safety and stability
5) Family reunification
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Homeboy Industries' core program is an 18-month paid re-entry and job training program serving approximately 250 men and women at a time. Individuals are welcomed into Homeboy's community of kinship to address their complex needs in a therapeutic environment. Participants do intensive internal work and receive wrap-around services, while also training in key workforce readiness skills and job certifications to prepare for viable employment. Nearly all our services are open to the public at no charge, allowing us to serve approximately 8000 additional clients each year.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
For 30 years, Homeboy has served thousands of men, women, and youth, supporting them on a journey of healing and making a positive change in their lives. Today, Homeboy Industries is the largest gang rehabilitation organization in the world.
Homeboy serves those deemed "least likely to succeed" by society. By the time our clients walk through the doors of Homeboy Industries, they desperately want to break out of a cycle of violence, addiction and/or incarceration, but they don't know how. Homeboy's unique combination of workforce training and comprehensive wrap-around services help with the "how." They are welcomed into Homeboy's community of mutual kinship, love, and comprehensive wrap-around services to address their complex needs in a therapeutic environment. Homeboy Industries’ Founder, Father Greg Boyle, has learned that, “a homie with a job or an education may reoffend, but a healed homie never will.”
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
