Mission Statement

For 30 years, SADD has been committed to empowering young people to lead education and prevention initiatives within their schools and communities. Founded as Students Against Driving Drunk in 1981 in Wayland, Massachusetts, SADD has grown to become the nation's leading peer-to-peer youth education, prevention, and activism organization with nearly 10,000 chapters in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission and name and now sponsors chapters called Students Against Destructive Decisions. SADD continues to endorse a firm 'No Use' message related to the use of alcohol and other drugs. With its expanded focus, SADD now highlights prevention of all destructive behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young people, including underage drinking, substance abuse, risky and impaired driving, teen violence and suicide.

Term:

Since June 2000

Chief Executive Profile:

Penelope Wells is an attorney and manager, serving since January, 2000, as the Executive Director of SADD, Inc. With a background in public policy and management, Ms. Wells served for 15 years as an executive in several government agencies prior to joining SADD. She has also served on a number of task forces and boards of nonprofits involved with children and issues surrounding alcohol, currently serving as Secretary on the board of NOYS (National Organizations for Youth Safety) which is comprised of 40 organizations focused on youth health and safey. Ms. Wells also serves as President of SADD. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and Boston University School of Law.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

"During the past 30 years, SADD has left a tangible mark on American society. Beyond the amazing statistics representing a culture change on the issue of impaired driving, SADD has contributed to development of a powerful and proud personal identity for hundreds of thousands of teenagers. SADD chapters have been those places in schools and communities where teenagers have stood up and spoken out for a safe and healthy future for themselves and for their friends. Yesterday's SADD students are today's civic and business leaders, continuing to assert their individuality and pursue their purpose of making their families, friends, and communities safer, stronger, and healthier. We thank all of those who have been involved with SADD in the past and who invest in SADD now. You are doing important work, and you are making a difference."

Program: SADD National Awareness Program

Budget:
$1,180,801
Category:
Youth Development
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Adults

Program Description:

SADD supports the growth and development of chapters primarily in middle and high schools across the country through programming and leadership training and promotes awareness of youth issues to the general public.
SADD participates in regional and national forums and coalitions focused on issues related to its mission: underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence and suicide, and other destructive decisions.

SADD also supports a network of state coordinators funded through government or charitable organizations to help deliver quality education and prevention materials and programming. These state coordinators work closely with the SADD advisors in their local networks to ensure program success.

Independent studies have shown that students in schools with an established SADD chapter are more aware of and informed about the risks of underage drinking, other drug use, and impaired driving. Students in schools with a SADD chapter are also more likely to hold attitudes reflecting positive reasons not to use alcohol.

Program Long-Term Success:

Since 1981, SADD has grown to become the leading youth-based prevention, education, and activism organization in the country. SADD has a registered network of nearly 10,000 SADD chapters with approximately 350,000 participating youth and more than 10,000 adult advisors. This represents approximately seven million youth in U.S. schools where SADD chapters exist.
As an active, established youth prevention program, SADD reaches into more schools and touches more young people for longer periods of time than does any other program. We are committed to delivering quality programming and continuously enhancing our ability to effectively reach young people, their families, and other caring adults.

Program Short-Term Success:

Every year, established SADD chapters re-register with the National office of SADD and new SADD chapters register for the first time, benefiting from the array of free tools, services, and resources that SADD, Inc. can offer. SADD distributes two electronic newsletters and communicates directly with youth through social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube; hosts a website which averages 44,000 unique visitors monthly; regularly releases to media outlets opinion-editorials and articles on pertinent youth-oriented topics; conducts and reports on national research on teen attitudes and behaviors; runs a four-day national youth leadership conference annually; sponsors a National Student Leadership Council and Student of the Year, providing members with four in-person peer leadership training retreats; hosts a SADD Speaker Series of motivational presentations highlighting original SADD research and practical solutions to difficult issues; and most importantly, raises funds for the development and dissemination of information and programming.
According to national research, 86 percent of teens and 95 percent of parents who are aware of SADD think SADD plays a positive role in influencing the choices teens make.

Program Success Monitored by:

SADD monitors progress of key campaign activities through evaluations submitted by SADD advisors from throughout the country, providing information and trainings on science-based prevention programming, and sharing "best practices" to encourage SADD chapters to replicate effective programming and awareness activities that have proven successful elsewhere.

Program Success Examples:

SADD’s unique approach involves young people delivering education and prevention messages to their peers through school- and communitywide activities and campaigns responsive to the needs of their particular locations. Projects may include peer-led classes and theme-focused forums, teen workshops, conferences and rallies, prevention education, leadership training, awareness-raising activities, and legislative work.

SADD offers a calendar planning tool and campaign kits for chapters to help structure their activities and initiatives through the school year. Typically, SADD chapters begin their year with a SADD membership drive and kick off their prevention programming with the implementation of Red Ribbon Week activities which focus on promoting a drug-free lifestyle.

SADD chapters share "best practices" with others throughout the country  through a section entitled "Chapter Chatter" in SADD's quarterly national newsletter and online at sadd.org in vignettes posted on "Real Life SADD."

Discussions also surface on our social networking sites where students share tips, advice, and useful ideas for other SADD chapters to consider duplicating in their school or community.

Program: State Awareness Program

Budget:
$715,193
Category:
Public, Society Benefit
Population Served:
Female Youth/Adolescents (14 - 19 years)
Male Youth/Adolescents (14 - 19 years)
Adults

Program Description:

SADD is conducting a research-based pilot study in Marlborough and Chatham, Massachusetts, that engages youth and influential adults in preventing underage drinking. This campaign challenges several deeply-held beliefs: that most teens are drinking alcohol; that there are no real negative consequences when teens drink; that teens don't face any peer pressure to drink; and that drinking is a "rite of passage" for teens as they approach adulthood. This innovative, multi-component campaign also involves parents, school administrators, law enforcement, and the local media as it seeks to help youth and adults challenge these common beliefs and to assist community leaders to clarify and enforce policies that deter youth drinking. Post evaluation, it is anticipated that a national campaign model will emerge from this local pilot.

The National office of SADD also houses the Massachusetts SADD program which conducts a full range of programming and youth leadership development training with more than 300 SADD chapters in schools across the Commonwealth.

Program Long-Term Success:

As noted, post evaluation, it is anticipated that a national campaign model will emerge from this local pilot which is designed to prevent underage drinking.

Program Short-Term Success:

SADD is in the second year of this three-year research-based pilot study. To date, the school administrators, students, and adults involved have been highly engaged.

Pre-test data is just now being compiled and analyzed by the research company involved in this program. Post evaluation, all data will be reviewed, analyzed, and presented in a program executive summary.

Working with an advertising agency, SADD has also helped design and launch a unique, interactive youth-friendly website that is garnering a tremendous amount of attention from the students in the control schools in this pilot.

Program Success Monitored by:

Once this pilot study is complete and the data analyzed, SADD plans to submit this underage drinking prevention program to a national organization that evaluates and recognizes proven effective programming.

Program Success Examples:

This pilot study is designed to help youth and adults challenge common beliefs about underage drinking and to assist community leaders to clarify and enforce policies that deter youth drinking. Results will be available post evaluation.

SADD Receives 2010 Mentor Foundation International Drug Abuse Prevention Award

November 23, 2010

SADD received one of four Awards celebrating achievements and innovation in the prevention of drug abuse among youth which was presented by the Mentor International Foundation’s President, Her Majesty the Queen of Sweden, at the recent Mentor International Gala in Washington, D.C.

The awards were presented to outstanding programs in four categories: Achievement, Innovation, Youth Initiative, and USA National Partner. This was the first time the awards were presented in the United States. Yvonne Thunell, the Chairman of Mentor International and USA, said that Mentor received more than 200 applications from 53 countries. “This shows that people all around the world are committed to prevent drug abuse among children and adolescents,” stated Thunell. “It is an honor for us to reward these talented organizations.”

The Youth Initiative Award was presented to SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts, for an initiative offered by youth for youth entitled Mobilizing the Community: Youth Taking the Lead (MTC).

“The project is a science-based initiative to help schools and local communities change attitudes and behaviors that currently encourage underage drinking among 9th and 10th grade students,” stated Penny Wells, SADD Executive Director. “We are tremendously grateful for this important recognition of SADD’s innovative prevention programming. This pilot provided a lot of lessons learned, and we are anxious to find new funding to help us build on this critical investment in America’s youth and roll out this program at a national level.”

MTC is a youth-focused, research-based campaign that engages youth and influential adults in preventing underage drinking. MTC asks SADD chapters to involve parents, school administrators, law enforcement officials, and the local media to help youth and adults challenge the perceived norms around underage alcohol use. Through this campaign, youth and community leaders are encouraged to identify, clarify and enforce policies that deter youth drinking. The campaign is unique because it is youth developed and youth led.

According to Wells, the initial investment supporting the development and implementation of this program came from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Education Development Center and Argus Communications provided additional services. Wells and Julie Nussbaum, Director of Prevention and project manager for the MTC pilot, were on hand for this ceremony.

SADD PARTNERS WITH OPRAH WINFREY AND HARPO STUDIOS ON
NATIONAL "NO PHONE ZONE DAY" FRIDAY, APRIL 30

April 30, 2010
--U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), FocusDriven, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), and RADD, the Entertainment Industry's Voice for Road Safety, join Winfrey for national day of awareness to end distracted driving--

CHICAGO - On Friday April 30, 2010, Oprah Winfrey and Harpo Studios are taking a stand against distracted driving, launching a new public service announcement campaign and joining forces with some of the country's preeminent transportation safety organizations to declare Friday, April 30th the first national "No Phone Zone Day." A large-scale effort to honor victims of distracted driving. "No Phone Zone Day" will also educate and activate Americans to end the deadly driving habits that kill nearly 6,000 Americans a year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The announcement was made today on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"A call or text isn't worth taking a life," said Winfrey. "We must not allow more mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, sisters and brothers to die before we take action against distracted driving. Let's put a stop to it now, by joining together on April 30th for national 'No Phone Zone Day,' and by making our cars a 'No Phone Zone.'"

"I've made it my mission at the DOT to end distracted driving. We know that if we can get people to put away cell phones and other electronic devices when they are behind the wheel, we can save thousands of lives and prevent hundreds of thousands of injuries every year" said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. "That's why I'm proud to support and participate in Oprah's 'No Phone Zone Day.'"

On Friday April 30th, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" will present a special live episode devoted to ending distracted driving. In conjunction with the episode, Harpo Studios is mobilizing communities to take action at "No Phone Zone Day" viewing rallies to be held in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. "Oprah" show partner stations WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta, WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit, KABC ABC7 in Los Angeles and WJLA ABC7 in Washington, D.C. will support the rallies in their respective markets. The planned rallies will bring together victims' families, elected officials, advocacy organizations, parents, youth, and law enforcement to discuss best practices and steps to limit distracted driving in their own communities. In addition, a new "No Phone Zone" public service announcement campaign will be showcased on the April 30th "Oprah" show.

A working coalition of transportation safety organizations will come together as part of "No Phone Zone Day" activities and viewing rallies across the country, including U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and the Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA); the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS); FocusDriven; SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions); RADD, the Entertainment Industry's Voice for Road Safety, and more.

In addition, "No Phone Zone" corporate partners Sprint, General Motors/Chevrolet and Liberty Mutual will lend their support, both for national "No Phone Zone Day" and in the coming months to spread the "No Phone Zone" message.

As a national call to action, all viewers and town hall participants will be asked to take the "No Phone Zone" pledge. By pledging, drivers agree to make their car a "No Phone Zone" and refrain from using their phone while driving, eliminating distractions from incoming calls, texts or e-mails. More than 160,000 people to date have signed Oprah's "No Phone Zone" pledge at Oprah.com. Many celebrities have already joined the cause, including Oscar® winners Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Mo'Nique, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, actress and icon Raquel Welch, Olympic superstar Shaun White, country music's Lady Antebellum, entertainer and entrepreneur Tyler Perry, the cast of TV's "Glee" and many more.

A 2008 NHTSA study indicated that at any given moment during the daylight hours, more than 800,000 vehicles are being driven by someone using a hand-held cell phone. According to a 2005 study for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers are four times less likely to get into accidents serious enough to cause injury when they turn off their cell phones while behind the wheel. For more information on "No Phone Zone Day," and to take the No Phone Zone pledge, please visit www.oprah.com/nophonezone.
