Chief Executive

Ms. Helen Claire Sievers

Term:

Since July 2009

Chief Executive Profile:

Helen Claire Sievers, who served as Executive Director from 2001 to 2008, returned to head the organization in 2009 after time in Bangladesh as the Academic Dean of the Access Academy of the Asian University for Women.  Helen Claire first joined WorldTeach after spending 18 years living in the Marshall Islands.  During her time in the Pacific, she was actively involved in the community, spending time as a high school principal, a hospital administrator, a community court judge, and the director of a handicraft co-op.  Previously, Helen Claire taught astronomy at Wellesley and Bentley Colleges, and was Executive Director of the Thyroid Foundation of America.  She is a graduate of Wellesley College with a degree in Astronomy and has an MS in Physics from Brigham Young University.  She is a recipient of the "Patriotic Civilian Service Award" from the United States Army for the work she did in improving US-Marshallese relations.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

WorldTeach aims to bring needed educational resources to developing countries, while providing for volunteers the opportunity to see a developing country function over time, at the grassroots level.  To help our partners besides sending volunteers to teach where they are needed (urban, suburban, or rural schools) the subjects they need support for (English primarily, but also math, science, computers where the language of instruction is English).  We support an extensive project to supplement the English teaching materials for every country where we partner, for each grade level where we have volunteers.  Through a 3 -4 week orientation prior to the beginning of school, and with supporting materials from the US and field offices, plus with the full-time in-country support of WorldTeach staff, WorldTeach aims to increase the depth of understanding for its volunteers of the country where they are volunteering.  Hopefully with good background resources, in-country support, and the experience of watching things play out in the country where they are serving for nearly a year, our volunteers will gain a more profound understanding of (and also caring for) another country quite dissimilar from their own.

Program Success Examples:

Funding Needs

WorldTeach supports programs at a cost between $8,500 - $11,000 per volunteer per academic year, plus the cost of provided housing.  Volunteers can pay up to $6,000 (and even at this cost, it is difficult to recruit large numbers of volunteers), but the remaining funds must come from our partners and from donors.  Partners always contribute the housing, and they cover the cost of the stipend and board for the volunteers, but WorldTeach is precluded from some partnerships because the countries that wish to partner with us lack the support funding.  We seek sustainable funding of $1,000 - $3,000 per volunteer per year in order to support programs in the most needy countries that would like our help.

Volunteer Needs

The primary need is for the funding to cover the basic costs of the program.  Volunteers will receive from $100 - $150 per month for a stipend and from $100 to $200 per month for food/utilities from the basic costs of the program.  WorldTeach needs to have these funds guaranteed before we can send volunteers.

In addition, most volunteers support in-country projects that they seek individual funding for (funds can be donated through WorldTeach), which include such things as playground equipment, libraries, seed money for student entrepreneurship programs, equipment for sports programs and materials for theatre productions, etc.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

Because of the prohibitive costs of shipping, we do not solicit in-kind contributions unless they are made in the country where we support a program.  We have received trucks and other vehicles, which were greatly appreciated by our field staff who visit regularly the volunteers.
