Mr. Charles Fletcher

Term:

Since Jan 2002

Profile:

Charles Fletcher has over 50 years experience in training and successfully showing all types of horses in almost every discipline. He has trained and shown American Saddle (five gaited) horses, fine harness horses, Standardbred horses to sulkies, and thoroughbred hunters and jumpers. He has instructed riders for over 40 years. He is a certified North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NAHRA) instructor in both riding and carriage driving. He has five years experience in recreational therapy and has pioneered Equine-Assisted Healthcare with seven years practice and has personally taught over 15,000 lessons. He is a NARHA Driving Clinician and conducts free carriage driving clinics for riding instructors from around the world. He is nationally recognized for his contributions to therapeutic driving. Mr. Charles, as the SpiritHorse children call him, has dedicated the remainder of his life and fortune to helping children through equine assisted healthcare. In addition to teaching children with disabilities horseback riding and horse carriage driving, he is well known for training abused horses and currently competes in combined driving trials. Mr. Fletcher is a retired business executive of a fortune 500 corporation and a former at-risk-youth.

Leadership Statement:

SpiritHorse has been a wonderful ministry for me. I love these children so much. By choice, I am not financially compensated which allows us to serve more children. I am, however, the world's richest man because I get paid in a higher currency: hugs and smiles. I am leaving my ranch and all of my assets to the SpiritHorse Children.

Board Leadership Practices (GuideStar Exchange,

?

GuideStar worked with BoardSource, the national leader in nonprofit board leadership and governance, to create this section, which enables organizations and donors to transparently share information about essential board leadership practices.

Board Orientation & Education ?
Why does this matter? Without clarity around their responsibilities and expectations, board members are not positioned to succeed. They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. BoardSource recommends that every new board member participate in a formal orientation process, and that all board members sign a pledge or agreement committing to their board service and to all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with service. Ideally, board members also should participate in a formal governance training program prior to serving on a board.

Does the board conduct a formal orientation for new board members and require all board members to sign a written agreement regarding their roles, responsibilities, and expectations?
Response Not Provided
CEO Oversight ?
Why does this matter? Oversight and management of the chief executive is one of the board’s most important legal responsibilities. The CEO or executive director is the board's single employee, and - just like any other employer/employee relationship - regular and written assessment is critical to ensuring that the chief executive and board are communicating openly about goals and performance. BoardSource recommends that boards conduct formal, written reviews of their chief executives on an annual basis, which should include an in-person discussion with the chief executive and distribution of the written evaluation to the full board.

Has the board conducted a formal, written assessment of the chief executive within the past year?
Response Not Provided
Ethics & Transparency ?
Why does this matter? A commitment to handling conflicts of interests is essential to creating an organizational culture of transparency. Boards should create and follow a policy for identifying and handling conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived. BoardSource recommends that organizations review the conflict-of-interest statement and require signed disclosures from all board members and senior staff on an annual basis.

Have the board and senior staff reviewed the conflict-of-interest policy and completed and signed disclosure statements within the past year?
Response Not Provided
Board Composition ?
Why does this matter? The best boards are composed of individuals who bring a variety of skills, perspectives, backgrounds, and resources to tackle the complex and strategic challenges confronting their organizations. BoardSource recommends that boards commit to diversity and inclusion by establishing written policies and practices, which include strategic and intentional recruitment of diverse board members, continual commitment to inclusivity, and equal access to board leadership opportunities.

Does the board ensure an inclusive board member recruitment process that results in diversity of thought and leadership?
Response Not Provided
Board Performance ?
Why does this matter? Boards need to regularly assess their own performance. Doing so ensures that they are being intentional about how they govern their organization, which is a critical component of effective board leadership. BoardSource recommends that a board conduct a self-assessment of its performance a minimum of once every three years to ensure that it is staying on track with its roles and responsibilities.

Has the board conducted a formal, written self-assessment of its performance within the past three years?

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

We are unique in that SpiritHorse and its 48 licensed centers are the only centers in America that provide all private equine-assisted healthcare services free of charge to people with disabilities, and/or abuse histories. We currently serve over 400 children and adults FREE OF CHARGE at our center in Corinth, Texas.  We have facilitated the founding of 55 SpiritHorse Centers worldwide that serve an additional 3,500 children each week. Two hundred of our children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Studies by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, have shown that the results of intervention with our award-winning methods have met the "Gold Standard" of statistical analysis: "Significant". The last study showed that after 10 weeks intervention, 9 children measured "non-autistic". The link to the peer-reviewed journal that published teh University of Texas Southwest Medical Center study is:   http://www.pagegangster.com/p/JcUCQ/_(http://www.pagegangster.com/p/JcUCQ/_) . We have heard 85 children speak their first words... seen 55children take their first steps... and seen 45 children sit up for the first time.   Here at SpiritHorse, the annual cost per rider is only $1,200 compared to a typical U.S. industry cost of $5,500. This is in spite of the fact that all of our sessions are the most expensive, private one-on-one. SpiritHorse is the only large center in the U.S. that offers all lessons FREE OF CHARGE.  Although funds are acquired through grants from foundations and corporations, we depend on support from you! There are several ways that you can help: Cash Donations, Buy-a-Brick, Shop for Groceries, Shop or Search Online, Sponsor a Rider, or Adopt-a-Horse.  If you are interested in any of these ways to help, please visit our website. http://www.spirithorsetherapy.com(http://www.spirithorsetherapy.com)
