Program: Warrior Treatment Today

Budget:
$462,453
Category:
Health Care
Population Served:
Military/Veterans

Program Description:

Program Activities: USA Cares provides support for those wounded in combat whose critical needs such as rent, mortgage payments, transportation to hospitals/physicians, essential bills, and other basic needs are not met by any other government program. Based on established criteria and need, assistance is available up to $2,500 per service member.

An extension of the Combat Injured Program, the Warrior Treatment Today (WTT) Program is designed to remove the financial barriers to treatment that exist for many service members suffering from PTSD and/or TBI. Many of these veterans cannot afford to leave their employment for in-patient treatment. National Guard and Reserve personnel are particularly vulnerable to this barrier when they resume their civilian lives after active duty.

To be eligible for either one of these two USA Cares Programs, participants must meet the following criteria. Their injuries must have occurred during military service in Iraq or Afghanistan. Relevant diagnoses must have been made by qualified military or civilian medical authorities. Loss of employment/income is not covered by medical or unemployment insurance. Financial difficulties must be significant enough that veterans’ families are in danger of losing their homes without financial assistance. Veterans must have been accepted into qualified treatment programs for recovery and rehabilitation. Documentation must be available to support the need. Finally, all potential recipients of assistance must be reviewed and approved by a USA Cares Virtual Committee.

USA Cares will provide financial assistance for essential household bills including rent and mortgage payments, utility bills, car payments, and repairs while veterans are in treatment – a period not to exceed 180 days. Payments are not made directly to veterans or their families but rather to landlords, banks, utility companies, etc. Throughout treatment, USA Cares Family Resource Coordinators will provide intensive case management to ensure approved payments are made in a timely manner and to coordinate various treatment/post treatment resources.

Program Long-Term Success:

Raised over $2.6 million, responding to over 5,400 total families in all 50 states and 7 territories overseas. Continue to maintain over 90% of our donated income back to the military family. We also stood up our first two regions with on the ground representatives to assist in telling the USA Cares story and let them know we are here.

Program Short-Term Success:

Program Success Monitored by:

Program Success Examples:

Funding Needs

Funding needed for our PTSD program to enable USA Cares to pay vital expenses that stand in the way of accessing treatment.  Also, support is needed for operations given the case management requirements of our programs.

Volunteer Needs

We are constantly seeking key volunteers to represent us and spread our mission.  Often times people want to help and volunteer, but do not know how.  There are many different ways you can get involved and help support USA Cares.  Go to: www.usacares.org to find out our current opportunities and sign up to be a volunteer.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

Jobs for Vets Program
May 16, 2010
USA Cares Bolsters it’s Jobs for Vets Program

New Program Manager Brings Vast Army Experience to the Job Radcliff, KY Bill Nelson, Executive Director of USA Cares announced at his Monday Staff Meeting that a long-time goal of the organization was being realized. He remarked “Our experiences show that employment is one of the biggest issues that returning OIF/OEF veterans are dealing with. It is a tragedy that someone who has put their life on the line may come home only to face unemployment. We know that veterans have the discipline, training and ethos to perform a wide variety of jobs and our Jobs For Vets Program is to form alliances to provide training and opportunities to alleviate this situation.” Bob Casher was named as the Program Manager for the Jobs for Vets Program. As the Program Manager, Bob provides job assistance to OIF/OEF veterans through a combination of financial assistance and employment training, referral and facilitation. Mr. Casher recently retired from the U.S. Army as a Command Sergeant Major, with 36 years of service, of which 26 years were Active Duty in the Army Reserve. Mr. Casher’s most recent assignments in the military were the Command Sergeant Major, for the 11th Aviation Command located at Ft. Knox Kentucky. Other military assignments were Operations Sergeant Major with a Transportation Group and Senior Enlisted Leader with Joint Warfighting Center, Joint Forces Command Norfolk Virginia. Mr. Casher was
where he received a Bronze Star for his actions. Retired Army Command Sergeant Major Bob Casher was named as the Jobs for Vets Program Manager deployed in support of Operation Iraq Freedom in 2003-2004
r. Casher has been married for 30 years. Additionally, Bob holds an Associate of Science Degree from Butler County Community College, El Dorado, Kansas and Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College in Albany, New York. His mission is to, “Reduce the impact of joblessness among the OIF/OEF Veterans".  USA Cares has established a connection between the veteran (and spouse), the skills training facilities and utilizing a combination of financial assistance and employment/training/referral and facilitation. Priority
will be given to Combat Injured, Guard and Reserve unemployed, and other OIF/OEF unemployed Veterans.” USA Cares is helping to save and the employment status of the homeowner veteran or spouse. In other words, the high rate of unemployment among post 9-11 veterans is driving unprecedented levels of homelessness. In addition, those who are wounded either visibly or invisible suffer a second wound hopelessness when they are unemployed and in danger of losing all that they hold dear. Beginning with both the National Association of Corrosion Engineers in Houston and a demonstration program in Memphis with the Western Tennessee Association of Builders and Contractor (WTABC), USA Cares has developed an information flow between the components of Jobs For Vets. USA Cares locates them; they are assessed according to inclination and skills capabilities and enter into
certified training courses that are industry standards. Funding for this project is along several lines. Government funding through federal and state programs like the Veterans Administration (VA) can fully underwrite those Veterans who have VA rated disabilities based on service connected injuries. The Veterans may still be fully capable of performing tasks associated in fields like electrical, carpentry and welding. Assessments will be undertaken throughout the program to align the right Veteran with the right job. For those who do not qualify government assistance, USA Cares, funded by both private and public grants and contributions, will provide the assistance.
PTSD/TBI Program
December 11, 2009
Reaching a hundred of anything is usually considered a milestone— whether its years of age or points in a basketball game. USA Cares has just reached such a milestone with the one-hundredth veteran assisted through our Warrior Treatment Today program. Begun in January 2009, the Warrior Treatment Today program has grown significantly as more and more veterans are coming
forward for help with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). USA Cares has helped veterans in over 26 states by providing financial support for basic needs such as mortgage, food, and bills while the veteran attends months of inpatient rehabilitation for PTSD/TBI. Without this support, many veterans simply could not afford to leave jobs and paychecks to get the necessary treatment they have earned and deserve.
Veteran number one hundred has a lot in common with his 99 predecessors. He was active duty Army on his first deployment to Iraq when his HUMMV was attacked. He is from a small town in Michigan where he has dealt with multiple injuries—both visible and invisible. Rated by the Veterans Administration at over 80 per cent disabled, our program participant number one hundred is trying to overcome those invisible wounds that must be healed before a return to normal life can really begin. USA Cares is proud to offer the Warrior Treatment Today program in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Generous private grant support has allowed us to expend over $160,000 in financial support to date. The sheer number of mental health casualties from combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan represents a formidable health care task that demands both public and private responders working together. Given the selfless service of our veterans—we can do no less.
