Mission Statement
Our mission is to increase awareness of the many and varied difficulties individuals with Autism Spectrum diagnoses face as children and adults. We have devoted our energies to educating staff and supporting families and school districts in their expansion of services for children. Our newer focus has been for the adult population where there has been little or no support.

Impact Statement
Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association was the first organization on Long Island to bring speakers knowledgeable about this condition to the educators and administrators teaching in this area in the early 1990s. We continue to be innovative and have expanded our conference offerings to an additional conference in the spring that focuses on independence for our adults and older teens.

Chief Executive Profile:
Patricia Schissel, President, is a parent of an adult with Asperger Syndrome. A former member of a board of education she is now running the group, its offices, two major conferences and is an adjunct on the graduate level at a nearby university where she has taught educator's about autism. She is a social worker who is committed to the parents, professionals and individuals on the spectrum in our group. The late diagnosis of her son makes her passionate about educating school and medical personnel about the signs to look for in children and adults and educating them about the strategies to employ to help them in their classrooms and offices so that our individuals can be fuller functioning members of society.
