Mission Statement

The USGA promotes and conserves the true spirit of the game of golf as embodied in its ancient and honorable traditions. It acts in the best interests of the game for the continued enjoyment of those who love and play it.    The USGA serves the game most visibly through the conduct of its national championships.  Together with The R&A, the USGA provides governance for the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, establishing equipment standards, and formulating the Rules of Amateur Status.  The USGA also maintains the USGA Handicap and Course Rating Systems, develops and promotes sustainable golf course management practices and celebrates the history of the game.

Impact Statement

Accomplishments:
1.  Achieved excellent exposure to the USGA's championships, from both a participant and a spectator perspective. About 35,000 people competed in the USGA's three international championships which are open to both professionals and amateurs, and ten national amateur-only championships.  Domestic media coverage of these events totaled over 80 hours.  International broadcasts and internet coverage extended the reach worldwide. 
2.  Reached out to USGA members as well as members of the general public, providing educational opportunities and exposure to a wide variety of golf issues. 
3.  Provided grants to fund local junior golf programs, disabled golfer programs, turfgrass & environmental research, and golf administration internships.
 
Objectives:
1. Continue to promote golf by providing increased exposure to national competitions on both a spectator and a participant level.
2.  Continue to reach out to USGA Members and others, providing information regarding the Rules of Golf, championships, and other golf issues of interest.
3.  Continue to make funds available for grants to local junior golf programs, turfgrass research, envirnmental research, and golf administration internships.

Chief Executive Profile:

Mike Davis serves as the Executive Director of the United States Golf Association.  Mr. Davis was named to this position in March 2011.  Mr. Davis began his career with the USGA in 1990, and has served in numerous positions within the USGA including Championship Relations Director, U.S. Open Championship Director, and most recently Senior Director of Rules and Competitions.
A native of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Mr. Davis was the Pennsylvania State Junior champion in 1982.  Mr. Davis graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1987, where he played for his college golf team.  He has also played in several prominent national amateur tournaments.
Mr. Davis resides with his family in Pittstown, NJ.

Program Description:

Each year the USGA fosters national and international amateur sports competition by conducting ten national amateur golf championships and three national open golf championship which are open to both amateur and professional golfers. Each year USGA staff agronomists provide turfgrass advisory services (TAS) to over 1,200 golf clubs and courses throughout the United States and abroad.  Additionally, the USGA Green Section provides educational materials to golf course superitendents and others.  The USGA also provides grants to colleges and univbersities.  Such grants are used to finance turfgrass research and environmental research which may benefit golf courses.
