Impact Statement from Nonprofit

Of the 137 families on the brink of having their children removed and placed in foster care who came to Leake & Watts over the past year, 96% were stabilized. Leake & Watts also helped 117 foster children to reunite with their families over the past year, arranged for 13 others to be permanently cared for by relatives, and created 42 new families through adoption.  Lastly, each school day over 420 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, who have not achieved success at their regular school, come to Leake & Watts either as residents or day students.   When they start, 87% read three years or more below their grade level and 83% are equally deficient in math skills.  Yet, through tailored instruction our students are achieving significant gains -- approximately 1.2 months of progress for every 1 month they are enrolled, closing the gap where they are and where they need to be.

Program: Foster Care Programs and Adoption Services

Budget:
$19,081,751
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

Leake & Watts’ Family Foster Care program began work in the 1940’s and serves children who have experienced abuse and neglect.  The goal in all cases is to establish a permanent appropriate living arrangement for the child, preferably back with his/her birth family.  If that is not possible, the goal is to establish a home with an adoptive family or to prepare the youth to live independently.

Our Mother/Child Home in the Bronx serves teen mothers in foster care.  Pregnant and parenting teens along with their children are served in these homes.  This placement is appropriate for youth who have experienced multiple failed prior placements in family foster care because of serious behavioral issues including aggression, defiance of authority, running away, and/or mental health issues.  In all cases, we work with the mothers to identify resources that can provide long-term support for them and their child (ren) as well as concurrently prepare them for adulthood.  The focus, as with all foster youth, is on education, skills development (with particular emphasis on parenting and homemaking for these mothers), employment, safety and well-being.

Our Residential Treatment Center, located on a 30-acre campus in Yonkers, NY, provides 24-hour residential care to youth age 12 - 21 requiring therapeutic and educational support. As part of the Residential Treatment Center, we operate Shrady Cottage for 14 girls who have been sexually exploited.  This highly structured program serves youth with emotional disorders who have experienced trauma as well as youth who are placed at Leake & Watts based on educational and therapeutic needs.

Funding Needs

Private funding is crucial to the success of those we serve. Our specific needs include:

Preventive Services: Working with at-risk families, we aim to stabilize them before they reach a crisis, preventing the need to place children in foster care.

Peer Leadership Project: We help youth in foster care gain skills, knowledge and resources to support their independence. The Leadership Circle trains them to be leaders at workshops for other teens in foster care.

After School Learning Hour:
We provide academic support to teens with special education needs, including tutoring, study groups, field trips and educational activities.

Parent Child Home Program: We offer in-home sessions to teen mothers in foster care, modeling positive parenting skills through play that nurtures their children's curiosity and creativity.

ACCESS Program: Specifically for children on the autism spectrum, ACCESS is an after school program focused on dance, art and crafts, drama and computer training.

Volunteer Needs

There are many ways for volunteers to get involved at Leake & Watts. Our specific needs at this time include:

Dance Instructor: We are looking for STEP, Hip Hop and Zumba Instructors to work with youth in our special education programs and at Woodfield Cottage.

After School Tutor: We are looking for volunteers to help teens from our Residential Treatment Center tackle their homework two hours a week.

Mentor for Teens: We are looking for volunteers willing to commit to a year-long relationship with a teen at our Residential Treatment Center or in our Family Foster Care Program. Help teens develop positive social skills, set goals and plan for the future.

Job Development Program Assistant: We are looking for volunteers with job development experience to help establish a program that will find employment opportunities for our students.

Clerical Database Assistant: We are looking for volunteers willing to lend their database and clerical expertise as we update our databases.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

At this time, our specific needs for in-kind donations include new raincoats and boots for preschool-age children, Wii games to distribute at our group homes for adults with developmental disabilities, popcorn poppers and juice/smoothie makers for teens at our Residential Treatment Center, elliptical machines and boxing gloves for our Teen Wellness Program, pre-school reading level books for our early childhood programs and teen-appropriate books for our Learning Center.
