Program Description:
The National News Media Program holds the national news media accountable for covering LGBT people and issues in the most responsible and least sensational way. The National News team monitors all news content on 24-hour cable news channels such as Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, all nightly network news telecasts on CBS, NBC and ABC, as well as selected news shows on PBS. The program also reviews and works closely with national newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek and Parade. GLAAD has a tremendous impact on policies of many major news outlets through media consultations and the use of its handbook of preferred professional LGBT terminology, The GLAAD Media Reference Guide.
The Spanish-Language Media Program works to increase the number and quality of LGBT Latino/a images in the growing market of Spanish language news and entertainment media. Spanish-language media continues to grow exponentially in size and influence, yet LGBT Latinos still find themselves feeling invisible within the United States population and the “mainstream” LGBT community despite the fact that Latinos are the largest minority group in the country. GLAAD uses a combined strategy of providing media literacy trainings to Latino LGBT activists and journalists, garnering media attention for major events, conferences and Pride festivals, and exposing defamation when it occurs. GLAAD also works with mainstream Latino and Spanish-speaking media professionals from Unvision, Telemundo, Azteca América, CNN en Español, La Opinion, Hoy and People en Español to help shape the way these media outlets cover LGBT Latina/o issues. This year, GLAAD has created a new strategic plan for Spanish Language Media that will increase understanding of LGBT issues in this critical market, by providing the movement with messaging and communications strategies, and significantly increasing national and international Spanish Language media coverage.
Program Long-Term Success:
Through our programs of media advocacy, GLAAD strives to increase representations of LGBT people and events in the media that are fair, accurate and inclusive. With staff on the ground nationwide and tremendous technological reach, GLAAD monitors the mass media to determine how LGBT people are being portrayed and represented. Based on the information gathered, we develop strategies to combat sexual prejudice in the media. We conduct media training services for industry professionals as well as allied activists and organizations, and we provide activism tools and resources to support those who are working locally in their communities to fight defamation. We also bring LGBT and allied leaders together to strengthen the LGBT equality movement as a whole, to change hearts and minds, and to reduce sexual prejudice, defamation and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

Program Description:
GLAAD’s largest program, the Media Field Strategy Program, addresses the need to confront discrimination toward LGBT people in smaller media markets across the country. Working at the grassroots level, the Media Field Strategists actively engage and support requests from local organizations for communications planning and press assistance, spokesperson development and media services such as writing or editing press releases, and making pitch phone calls on behalf of our community partners. The Media Field Strategy team handles defamation issues that arise at the local, statewide and regional level, conduct detailed presentations for media professionals seeking to improve their portrayals of LGBT people and events, and increase positive coverage of LGBT issues by framing and pitching stories to regional media outlets. In addition, within the Media Field Strategy Program, GLAAD organizes advocacy on behalf of Communities of African Descent and Asian-Pacific Islander communities in order to ensure cultural competence and visibility for LGBT communities of color.

Program Description:
Digital media has opened the door to new opportunities in the world of social justice advocacy. Through the Digital Initiatives Program, GLAAD is at the forefront of engaging with LGBT, progressive and moveable middle audiences in this medium and training local individuals and organizations to do the same. Social media has also provided new platforms for anti-LGBT voices and bullies and GLAAD has worked with sites such as Facebook to create policies that ensure online spaces are safe for all. This year, GLAAD is developing an online advocacy platform, with the ability to aggregate LGBT-related media, engage activists in sharing local stories and reporting anti-LGBT incidents, and marshal user-generated support for our national campaign to amplify the stories of the LGBT community.
