Chief Executive

Ms. Perrine Vaillant

Term:

Since May 2011

Chief Executive Profile:

Perrine Vaillant grew up in Paris, France and has been the Executive Director of the American Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam since 2011. She first came to the organization as Assistant Executive Director in 2008. She had previously been working in the non-profit sector with Amnesty International, and other organizations in France and the United States. She also worked with the French embassy in Rabat, Morocco. Perrine holds a Masters in International Relations and Geopolitics from the Institute of Political Studies of Toulouse, France and Certificate in Human Rights with the College Universitaire Henry Dunant in Geneva.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

For four years, I have worked with the American Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam and been inspired by the tireless work of Jewish and Palestinian residents of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam toward a peaceful future for the two people in the region.

Their dedication makes the “Oasis of Peace” such a unique place, whose impact reaches out to the entire region and further.

Think about it: in 30 years, they created the first ever binational, bilingual and multicultural primary school in Israel, where Palestinian and Jewish children learn together about each other, while achieving academic excellency. They also opened the School for Peace, a institution that, before anyone used to talk about “people-to-people” programs between Jews and Palestinians, brought hundreds of teenagers from both sides together for in-depth encounters where they could discuss the core issues of the conflict, get to understand the “other side” without giving up their own identity and beliefs. The School for Peace has brought more than 50,000 youth and adults together since its creation in 1979 and is now internationally recognized for its conflict resolution work. The village also created institutions like the Pluralistic Spiritual Center that focuses on interfaith and mediation work all around the country, and the Nadi/Youth Club where young people of the community can develop skills and deal with their unique situation of growing up in the only community of its sort while being citizens of the often segregated State of Israel. And finally, Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam continues its avant-garde work with the recent opening of a Peace College, which reaches out to students and scholars not only in Israel but from all over the world to learn from the experience of the community and advance peacebuilding studies.

So you can imagine what a pleasure it was for me to accept the position of Executive Director in 2011. I look forward to develop the capacity of the American Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam to advance - from the United States - the impact of the educational programs of the community. There is still so much we can do with your help to make sure peace finally prevails in the region. Thank you for your interest in and support to the “Oasis of Peace.”

News

The Primary School in 2011/2012
July 11, 2011

In the last decades, more than 1,200 Palestinian and Jewish children have graduated from the first ever binational, bilingual and multicultural Primary School. They have influenced their families, communities, students of schools and universities they attended and for the first of them, their workplaces. They have all learned to strive for peaceful coexistence, and to respect the “other” while being faithful to their own identity. Thanks to worldwide supporters, they are the generation that might put an end to this conflict.

The Primary School will start a new year this September with 210 children – the school unfortunately had to decline many other applicants due to budget cuts. These children will learn about each other’s traditions and culture in both Arabic and Hebrew. Faithful to its tradition of constant innovation, the staff has recently finished developing a new formal curriculum for binational, bilingual and multicultural education that perfectly fits the school setting and provides a model for quality education in a binational environment. The American Friends of NSWAS has launched an "Adopt a Class" campaign to support the 1st grade class this year.

School for Peace's programs for 2011
July 19, 2011

Since its creation in 1979, about 50,000 people have participated in the School for Peace’s programs for youth, underprivileged women, facilitators and professionals. Many moved on to careers dedicated to peace, human rights defense and binational cooperation. They are among the leaders of the peace movement today and this is made possible by the financial support the School for Peace receives from individuals and foundations over the years to organize its programs.

The School for Peace is currently implementing a major program for the United States Agency for Development (USAID) targeting 120 environmentalists, women journalists and up-and-coming politicians from Israel and the West Bank. Also, since May 2010, 30 young Jews and Palestinians meet monthly on a human rights-oriented youth encounters; the program provides them with the opportunity to meet the “other side” sometimes for the first time and to acquire skills to advance human rights in their communities. Women courses and facilitators training are also ongoing at the School for Peace. These participants are influencing - each at their own level - the present situation and concretizing peaceful cooperations between the two sides of the conflict.

2010 saw the opening of the Fred Segal Friendship Library, the first library in the region focusing on peace and conflict resolution on an international scholarly level. The Friendship Library will serve as a resource and educational center for local and international academics, personnel from peace NGOs and others interested in the field of peace studies and education.

This year, the School for Peace, in partnership with the American Friends of NSWAS, is working to develop a new institution that will host a Masters Program, Certificate programs and a Teacher program in bilingual education for Israeli teachers.
The Pluralistic Spiritual Center: a difficult year ahead
December 06, 2010

In less that 10 years, the Pluralistic Spiritual Center has changed the landscape of interfaith encounters in Israel. Its programs have brought together Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders to develop common strategies for peace in the region. The Center has created an interfaith program focusing on young people - 16/17-years old - to develop their understanding of their own and the other communities’ religious and cultural identities and backgrounds. They have implemented mediation training and sessions in several cities in Israel to deal with local conflicts between Jews and Palestinians.

Unfortunately, due to a decreased funding these past few months, most of the programs have been put on hold or slowed until more funding is available.
