Mission Statement

Sharsheret , Hebrew for chain, is a national not-for-profit organization supporting young Jewish women and their families facing breast cancer. Our mission is to offer a community of support to women, of all Jewish backgrounds, diagnosed with breast cancer or at increased genetic risk, by fostering culturally-relevant individualized connections with networks of peers, health professionals, and related resources.

Program Description:

Sharsheret has developed 10 programs in response to the needs of young Jewish women facing breast cancer; collaborated with renowned breast cancer organizations to present 10 medical symposia; and published and distributed over 80,000 educational booklets as part of our Facing Breast Cancer as a Jewish Woman Resource Series. Sharsheret’s efforts are eliminating the stigma associated with breast cancer thereby generating life-saving conversations about the importance of breast care, breast cancer screening, and breast cancer genetics, and empowering breast cancer survivors by encouraging them to volunteer and share their experiences with other women.

Program Long-Term Success:

Every young women of all Jewish backgrounds diagnosed or at risk of developing breast cancer will receive support and have their unique concerns addressed as a result of calling Sharsheret.

Program Short-Term Success:

The women who call Sharsheret for support will be matched with women in our Peer Support Network and their unique needs will be addressed through our many programs.

Program Success Monitored by:

The number of women and families who call Sharsheret for support and the individuals Sharsheret is able to reach through education and outreach initatives.

Program Success Examples:

Since 2001 over 900 women of all Jewish backgrounds have joined Sharsheret's programs from 42 states nationwide. Sharsheret has received more than 19,000 phone calls and e-mails from those affected by breast cancer, health care professionals, women’s organizations, Jewish organizations, and others interested in learning more about the important services Sharsheret provides nationwide.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Since Sharsheret’s founding in 2001, we have responded to more than 23,000 breast cancer and ovarian cancer inquiries, involved more than 1,200 peer supporters from 42 states, and presented more than 250 educational programs nationwide. Sharsheret has developed 10 programs in response to the needs of young Jewish women facing breast cancer; collaborated with renowned breast cancer organizations to present 10 medical symposia; and published and distributed over 80,000 educational booklets as part of our Facing Breast Cancer as a Jewish Woman Resource Series. Sharsheret’s efforts are eliminating the stigma associated with breast cancer thereby generating life-saving conversations about the importance of breast care, breast cancer screening, and breast cancer genetics, and empowering breast cancer survivors by encouraging them to volunteer and share their experiences with other women. All Sharsheret programs are open to all women and men, without regard to age, race, religion, or nationality.  In recognition of Sharsheret’s important contributions to women’s health, Sharsheret was named a recipient of the New York State Innovation in Breast Cancer Early Detection and Research Award, and selected as a member of the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance.  Our Executive Director was recently appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women under the auspices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
