Mission Statement

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) because they cause severe inflammation of the intestinal tract, and have common symptoms. The cause remains unknown, and there is no medical cure. The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America was founded in 1967. Its mission is to find a cure for Crohn's diseasse and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.

Richard "Rick" Geswell has had a distinguished career in nonprofit health agency management. Over the past 30 years, Rick has worked in all areas of resource development and field operations. Rick's experience incorporates leadership positions in the American Heart Association, March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Rick's background covers all aspects of development: major gifts, special events, direct response, planned giving, e-giving and corporate development. In addition to his impressive fund raising track record, he has served as a chapter director, regional director, Regional VP and National VP for Field Operations. Most recently Rick has served for seven years as the Executive VP, Revenue and Marketing for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society where he more than doubled revenue during his tenure from $109 million to $225 million. Rick is dedicated to the principle of strategic planning and has both participated and lead the strategic planning and business planning process. In his words "Planning is key to an organizations readiness to move into the future. It's critical that the organization wide enterprise have a focused discipline driven by a vision that establishes priorities and brings the organization into alignment." Mission driven, Rick has integrated mission into all aspects of his work. The success in major gifts at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is directly attributable to the cooperative model of research, patient services and fund raising developed under Rick's leadership.

Program Description:

The Foundation focuses on three mission-critical programs: research, education and support services. Our research program has provided more than $125 million for IDB research, with over $10 million in 2006. We receive more than 220 IBD research grant applications a year, and fund more than 160 projects. Educational workshops and symposia within CCFA?s patient and professional services?together with our scientific journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, enables medical professionals to keep pace with the rapidly growing field of IBD research. Our recently established Information Resource Center provides information, guidance and support by Masters-level health professionals five days a week. Additionally, we offers more than 300 support groups across the United States, advocate to increase federal research funding and promote postive quality of life legislation for IBD patients, and run Camp Oasis, a multi-day summer camp program for young people with Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Program Long-Term Success:

Awarded $16 million in research grants in the field of IBD. Additionally, the Foundation initiated three new cutting-edge research projects: the CCFA Gut Microbiome Initiative, the Pediatric Network and the Clinical Alliance.
