Program Description:
We are a law firm for poor people. We provide free assistance and represntation to low income people in civil, non criminal, cases. We will help secure, protect and preserve teh legal rights of our clients.
Program Long-Term Success:
Fundamental fairness and access to the justice system, in all its parts, would be fully available to everyone, particularly those who need them most--people who are poor, culturally or socially isolated, and people who may belong to groups who are unpopular.
Program Short-Term Success:
Effectively representing individual clients and achivieving outcomes that prevent an eviction, restores their Social Security Disability payments, or puts in place an order of protection all constitute the type of short term success that we strive for at LASNNY. We also conduct many legal edcuation trainings that enable private attorneys to represent our clients.
Program Success Monitored by:
The Legal Aid Society records the details and outcome of every case handled by the Society as mandated by our primary funder the Legal Service Corporation. We also periodically conduct point in time surveys to determine how many people we are: serving, partially serving, unable to fully serve, and turn away categorized by area of law. This information is available on our website.
Program Success Examples:
LASNNY achieved victories for our clients on a daily basis.
Most recently attorneys who are part of our Foreclosure Prevention Project were able to renegotiate terms of the loan at a settlement conference and help keep a client in her home.We also successfully represented a domestic violence victim in a custody dispute. A child was given the classroom accommodations he was entitled to to ensure his academic success becasue of our attorneys intervention.
Funding Needs
Gifts for our Annual Fund, The Justice for All Campaign and our Endowment, The Guardians of Justice.
We also have funding needs for variety of special projects geared towards various constituencies such as the homeless or near homeless, victims of domestic violnce, seniors, immigrants, children, people living with AIDS, etc.
Volunteer Needs
Volunteer attorneys to represent clients pro bono on civil legal matters onlyof their choice. Corporate members for our Justice for All Board.
