Mission Statement

The purpose of Summer Songs is to encourage, support and promote the creation of songs, the work of songwriters, and to facilitate the inclusion of original songs in the life of communities by providing: Opportunities for live performances by songwriters. Networking for songwriters. Resources and events, which promote songwriting. Making recordings that document and disseminate the work of songwriters within their communities.

Program Description:

Classes were held in all aspects of songwriting, singing, guitar, piano, and performance. A new program focusing on recording arts was started: Autumn Songs and 19 students got to record their original songs. 224 students attended from all over the country and from other countries as well. The staff consisted of twenty four teachers, each well known in their field. Many songs were written at camp and people who attended have been performing their songs in the communities in which they live.

SummerSongs produced five songwriter's retreats, for the support and education of songwriters, which took place in: WinterSongs West: Zaca Lake Retreat, Las Olivos, CA Jan. 26th- 29th. WinterSongs: Ashokan Field Campus, part of the State University of New York, New Palfz, from Feb. 16th-19th. SummerSongs West: June 24th-29th at Zaca Lake Retreat, Los Olivos, CA. SummerSongs 2007: Aug. 3rd to Aug. 10th of Ashokan Field Campus. AutumnSongs 2007: Oct. 26th-29th at Ashokan Field Campus.
