Impact Statement
FAI is now working with Guilford County Schools to provide experiences for service learning. This summer a team of students worked with FAI to address getting community involvement to help move FAI toward healthy growth and sustainability. FAI had a group of leaders from 14 regions of Africa come to observe and learn about how a food outreach program works and how they might glean some ideas for implementation in their own regions in Africa.

Chief Executive
Jane Yvonne Carlson
Term:
Since

2003
Chief Executive Profile:
CAE experience in running a association for 17 years. Developed a food bank SHARE program and then developed an inhouse SNAP distribution food program. Worked for a local foundation. Coordinated and developed a walk-up pantry which was serving 1200 people a month. Started Food Assistance, Inc. nine years ago to address the problem for low-income seniors who do not drive or have transportation but are needing food assistance. Encourage volunteers to develope realtionships with the seniors they deliver to to remove the "welfare" stigma that sometimes is attached to food programs.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
It becomes increasing important to be able to offer this service as seniors are struggling more than ever to have their basic needs met. One in 4 people in Guilford do not have enough money for food 24.9%. The seniors low-income population is 19.5%. Many of the seniors FAI serves are raising grandchildren under the age of 18 without financial assistance. In a time when many are struggling much of the funding has dried up and it is becomming increasing difficult to continue receiving charitable funding. In this process many volunteers find that ethic, social, and cultural barriers come down as people get to know each other one-to-one. Many acts of kindness result from the relationships that are formed. Parents who participate with their children are able to teach their children the importance of helping others and giving to others in need. Teams come together to work and grow leaders for today and tomorrow.
