Mission Statement

Our work focuses on youth at the margins of our society. It's a broad spectrum: youngsters affected by abuse and neglect, social ostracism, homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, teen parenthood. Our work empowers young people with creative tools - tools they will use to make themselves stronger through a carefully structured process of creating art. As they develop creative skills through challenging and difficult work, they gain new ways of seeing and coping with the world.

Impact Statement

“I hated writing before, and then I did PlayWrite, and it opened my mind to creativity… Things just pop out now.” (Kaitlin, PlayWrite graduate)

"Once you do PlayWrite, you'll never look at the world the same way again." (Jazmin, PlayWrite graduate)

“Having Play Write come work with us was a transformative experience -- for each individual client and for our program community as a whole.  Play Write created a uniquely safe and supportive context for the youth to do the hard and delicate work of sharing their stories and of having those stories witnessed in a manner that created new kinds of healing, self-respect, self-discovery, and possibility for all who participated.” (Becky, Program Manager)

“No one that has participated in a PlayWrite workshop will ever be the same afterwards.  It's a hugely transformative experience... for both the young writers, and those of us lucky enough to coach them. I have been a theater professional for the majority of my life, and work with dozens of local and national companies every year.  Of all the companies I work with, PlayWrite is hands-down the most important and rewarding, on every level.” (Lyndsay, PlayWrite Coach)
