CEO/Executive Director Statement:
We believe in the power of nature and recreation in the form of surfing and meaningful occupation to help children and adults with mental and physical injuries. The skills essential in learning how to surf apply to daily lessons in living a healthy life: you fall down and get up to try again. The unique element of our JMMF Ocean Therapy program is the therapeutic addition of "talk therapy," to the physical aspects of learning the new skill of surfing. Our talk therapy has been dubbed, the "kumbaya sessions," by the Marines and Veterans who are year round participants. The assistance of supportive volunteers, trained in the physical aspects of surfing and the therapist led discussions that encourage all the participants to share their feelings about their physical experience is what makes JMMF Ocean Therapy Surf Sessions unique. Other organizations teach participants how to surf, JMMF helps men, women and children use the sport of surfing to increase their self confidence, enhance their lives and create a bond with their community.

Youth Ocean Therapy Program
- Budget:
-
$15,000
- Category:
-
Mental Health, Substance Abuse
- Population Served:
-
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Program Description:
Ocean Therapy is a free and volunteer supported adaptive surfing program to assist people coping with mental and physical illness and injury in accessing the ocean environment. Surfing has long since been a sport associated with freedom and independence and has the ability to heal and support people with special needs in increasing their self-esteem, self-confidence and overcome trauma.
The purpose of the Ocean Therapy Program is to increase perceived self-efficacy in people with physical and developmental disabilities through engagement in physical activity in the ocean environment, specifically, the activity of surfing. Self-efficacy is defined as ?an individual?s belief in their own ability to achieve a personal goal.? Ocean Therapy stresses that by successfully engaging in the activity of surfing and riding waves, people will increase their self-confidence and belief in their ability to achieve other goals in other life areas.
Program Long-Term Success:
The results of our first two years of the program were beyond expectations. These results have been documented in increased self-efficacy scale scores, from before and after the surfing experience and the accolades and anecdotes from the staff and directors who work with the organizations that have participated. The smiles and laughs from participants, volunteers and staff are a real testament to the good work we are doing.

Utilizing these principals, it is estimated that the activity of surfing has the ability to support individuals with special needs in increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence.
The purpose of this program is to increase perceived self-efficacy in individuals with physical, developmental and/or psychological issues through engagement in physical activity in the ocean environment, specifically, the activity of surfing. We need volunteers who are comfortable in the water and can assist the instructors.
