Impact Statement
We have installed more than 15,000 Biosand Water filters since our start up in 2001, with each filter providing clean water for about 8-10 people per day. We help approximately 2500 families each year. In addition, we have trained a number of other organizations in how to start and run Biosand filter projects and resource those projects with expertise and materials at cost. Projects we have trained have now installed 10,000+ filters themselves.

Chief Executive
Chris Rolling
Term:
Since
Feb
2004
Chief Executive Profile:
Under the direction of CEO/Executive Director Chris Rolling Clean Water for Haiti has grown exponentially. Since taking over as Executive Director in 2004 Chris has increased the productivity of the organization, improved the efficiency of work, improved the quality of training offered to other organizations and overall has established a very good reputation for the organization that is known throughout Haiti and in North America. Chris has also used his engineering background (with help from another engineer) to redesign the filter mold. This redesign is now the commonly accepted design throughout the world. All of this has been accomplished while working through the day to day struggles that come with working in a country like Haiti.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
In the 9 years that I have worked with Clean Water for Haiti I have seen the lives of people in Haiti change because of the work we do. People have shared with me that they have seen a change in the overall health of their communities when large numbers of filters have been installed in areas.
We aim to be good stewards of what we receive. I like that we're an all volunteer run organization and that we can tell donors their gifts are actually being spent twice - once to get people clean water through the use of Biosand filters, and again through the employment of local men and women. I think Clean Water for Haiti is one of the best organizations out there and I'm honored to be a part of what we're doing.

- Budget:
-
$120,000
- Category:
-
International, Foreign Affairs & National Security
- Population Served:
-
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Program Description:
CWH is able to provide a simple, effective and affordable solution to the lack of clean water sources for Haitian families. The household Biosand filter is a simple design that uses basic readily available materials, allows for easy production and is easy to transport. There are no moving parts, they do not require electricity and can be used by even the youngest members of the family.
With minimal maintenance a Biosand filter can work effectively for over 20 years. We can produce, deliver and install filters for about $50 US.

Program Description:
3-5 times annually we host week-long training sessions to teach representatives of other organizations how to make and distribute Biosand Filters in Haiti. Typicall host 6-15 students at a time from between 2 and 5 different organizations. The class is divided between theory and practical sessions, and includes filter construction, delivery, installation, user education, follow up, sourcing materials, how to organize a project, how to finance a project, and how to create and build a reputation as an organization that provides Biosand filters to beneficiaries. The training classes are supported entirely by tuitions, although CWH indirectly subsidizes the cost by not including the cost of facilities use in tuitions.
Classes are provided to students sent by organizations which intend to start Biosand filter projects. Tuition is $200/student for the entire week of classes and includes food and housing.

Program Description:
We know that by enabling other organizations to start and run effective Biosand filter distribution projects, we may be doing more to help the cause of Clean Water in Haiti than with our own filter distribution program. We sell molds to projects that have trained technicians with us. The molds are sold at cost, making this program revenue neutral. We also provide other filter supplies at cost (tubes and diffusion plates) because these plastic parts are sourced abroad and it makes our clients' work much easier. They are also provided at cost.
We provide 20-35 molds and sell 2000-4000 sets of tubes and plates to other projects in a typical year.

Funding Needs
We are always aiming to increase our capacity and with that comes more labor, materials, vehicle maintenance etc. Having a stable funding base helps us account for those needs. In the last 5 years we have seen our production levels increase from about 20 filters/month to about 200 filters/month (installed).
At this point we rely mostly on donations from individuals, churches, schools, and service groups. We would like to stabilize our funding by working with foundations and grant organizations on an annual basis so we can more easily plan for growth and expansion.
Volunteer Needs
Because we have a fully trained staff of local Haitians that do most of the day to day work within our programs our volunteer needs are much different than most organizations like ours. Our needs for volunteers in Haiti are for people that can commit to a long term of a year or more, and who have leadership ability. Haiti is a hard country to work and live in, so volunteers need to be flexible and willing to put themselves in the position of being a learner. To see our volunteer package please visit our website (www.cleanwaterforhaiti.org)
In the US we have a need for people who are willing to help with fundraising efforts. To connect with our fundraising directors please email our office at office@cleanwaterforhaiti.org.
