Mission Statement

In the United States today, the typical middle-class child enters first grade with 1,000-1,700 hours of picture book reading time. The same child from a low-income family averages just 25 hours. The American literacy gap emerges early and only widens with time. According to the 2005 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Nation's Report Card, only 46% of low-income 4th graders read at or above the basic level compared to 77% of their middle-class peers. This stark disparity between low-income and higher-income children's reading abilities points to an education crisis in dire need of attention. Children raised in poverty often begin school with limited exposure to books and, as a result, underdeveloped literacy and language skills. In the U.S., 40% of children come from low-income families. These 29.2 million children hear only 1/2 to 1/3 as many spoken words as children in more affluent households. According to the report of the National Commission on Reading, Becoming a Nation of Readers, 'the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.' By matching volunteers with at-risk elementary students for read aloud sessions, Everybody Wins! (EW!) engages one of the nation's greatest resources, corporate volunteers, to combat the literacy crisis. Reading mentors enhance self-esteem and encourage success by providing consistent, one-on-one, weekly attention and serving as role models.
