Program Description:
Deep Springs is expanding an established water program to provide bucket systems to 20,000 families in the Leogane area. This is primarily funded through earthquake relief.
Program Long-Term Success:
Deep Springs is working with two groups of community health workers in this area. These health workers will provide long-term follow-up with each family that obtains a Deep Springs bucket system. The health worker sells chlorine to the family and tests the family's water for residual chlorine once per month. This network of accountability has proven to increase consistent use of water treatment in the home in rural Haiti.
Program Short-Term Success:
About 10,000 buckets have been distributed as of March 16th, 2010. The goal is to reach 20,000 buckets by the end of April 2010.
Program Success Monitored by:
Michael Ritter, community health workers, and Deep Springs Haitian employees.
Program Success Examples:
10,000 families in the program means that over 50,000 people are being served thus far. In an area hit very hard by the earthquake, this is monumental. A study conducted by the CDC indicated that 80% of families were testing positive for chlorine residual in their homes.
