Mission Statement

The mission statement of the MdDS Balance Disorder Foundation is as follows:

Mission Statement: The mission of the MdDS Balance Disorder Foundation is to promote education and research on Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS), a rare and poorly understood disorder of perceived motion. We are dedicated to finding a cause and a cure for Mal de Debarquement Syndrome.

 Goals:

  • To provide support and education for patients and families of those with this rare balance disorder
  • To facilitate clinical studies designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of MdDS 
  • To promote basic and clinical research to better understand the cause(s) of this unique syndrome 
  • To collect, collate, and distribute demographic and other information from those with MdDS via online surveys (at present, our findings represent the world's largest available database of results about this patient population) 
  • To update professionals who provide medical care and treatment of MdDS patients

Funding Needs

The MdDS Balance Disorder Foundation is seeking funds to continue and expand research. Foundation sponsored research is being carried out at UCLA and at Ohio University.  Money is also needed to expand the educational efforts about Mal de Debarquement syndrome as more cases are identified world-wide.


Volunteer Needs

The MdDS Balance Disorder Foundation needs volunteers to achieve Foundation goals in support of research and to complete the mission of educating the public and medical professionals.

New MdDS Research Study to be Conducted at UCLA

January 01, 2010
Yoon-Hee Cha, MD, has been awarded a three year grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct clinical studies on Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS). Beginning January 2010, Dr. Cha will receive funding from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), a NIH institute that supports research on disorders of balance. The award to Dr. Cha (Functional Neuroimaging and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Mal de Debarquement) represents the inaugural use of US federal research dollars to investigate the cause and potential treatment of MdDS.
