Chief Executive
Mr. Nicholas Torres
Chief Executive Profile:
Nicholas Torres was appointed President by the Board of Directors in September 2001, after proving his skills as an effective administrator, systems thinker, educator and therapist in the Division of Children and Youth Services. Under Mr. Torres' leadership, Congreso is establishing itself as the leading organization regarding Workforce Development Initiatives with the first Latino community-based CareerLink focused on Latino employment in the State of Pennsylvania and a Neighborhood Center focused on transitioning participants off the welfare roles. Beyond programs, Mr. Torres makes it a priority to spend much of his energy on community wide issues. He founded and chairs the Eastern North Philadelphia Youth Services Coalition (ENPYS). This Coalition unites community based organizations to provide culturally appropriate supportive services to youth. Also, under Mr. Torres' leadership, Congreso is leading the community development of the emerging Mexican population in South Philadelphia. Currently Mr. Torres is the Southeastern Chair of the Governor's Commission on Children and Families and the Vice Chair of the United Way Professional Advisory Council.
His professional background includes serving as a family/child therapist for a Philadelphia based non-profit organization, teaching 3rd and 4th graders in a bilingual classroom setting in Bronx, New York through Teach for America and AmericaCorps, and working in various other social services capacities developing and implementing programs. He is bilingual in Spanish and English. Mr. Torres holds an M.Ed. in Counseling Education from the University of Texas at Austin
