Mission Statement

Community Bike Works provides inner-city children living in at-risk situations with meaningful work-ethic alternatives to gangs, drugs and the streets. We use bicycles, peer role models and adult mentors to develop and nurture relationships and to engage youth; and once engaged, influence their behavior and their outlook about school and life.

Of the participants in our Reading Program the following increases in reading levels were documented:

Program Description:

CBW offers several programs detailed on our website www.communitybikeworks.org The three core programs include Earn A Bike, Reading & Homework, and Peer Volunteer Instructors. In the Earn A Bike program kids sign a contract committing to a 12 week course where they learn mechanics and perform community service while earning a used bike they repair. Participants in the Reading & Homework Program are matched with an "America Reads" volunteer. Last year 60% of the participants showed a marked improvement in reading level. Some kids choose to continue as Peer Volunteer Instructors and ultimately, may be hired as paid Apprentices.

81.3% of the children who began our 13 week earn a bike program completed it.
