Program Description:

To achieve the goals of our targeted efforts, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation manages activities in three areas: 1. Support of health projects and programs that lead to a positive impact on major health challenges facing the Americas 2. Recognition of leaders in inter-American health 3. Education by providing affordable textbooks and instruments to students PAHEF provides grants and donations of medicines to countries of the Americas for a broad range of health areas such as prevention of obesity, child nutrition, healthy aging, indigenous health, infection control, drug safety, parasitic diseases, vaccines, laboratory practices, and health worker training. These grants are helping build important ground-work and initiatives in our areas of strategic focus. The PAHEF Grants Program is divided into two broad areas: 1. Donor-Funded Grants: PAHEF supports various health projects of PAHO and other organizations 2. PAHEF-Funded Grants: With its own resources, PAHEF supports initiatives within the Foundation's priority areas and PAHO priority programmatic objectives For 40 years, PALTEX (The Expanded Textbook and Instructional Materials Program), a joint technical cooperation program with the Pan American Health Organization, has provided more than six million affordable books and instruments to students and health professionals -- physicians, nurses, dentists, nutritionists, veterinary doctors -- at 555 institutions in 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The instructional textbooks include books in English translated into Spanish and self-published books. The self-published textbooks are also available to Spanish-speaking professionals and students outside of Latin America. The Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health program is a partnership between Pan American Health Organization and the Foundation. It recognizes excellence in inter-American health, community service, health literature, veterinary public health, and bioethics. These prestigious awards honor dedicated professionals who led the way in advancing health conditions in the Americas during the last century, and stimulate the growth of the next generation of leaders working to improve health in the Americas. The Global Violence Prevention Project is building a broad coalition of individuals from organizations that endorse and fund work in global violence prevention. In addition, it examines the successes and methods of comparable movements for other public health coalitions to help build and strengthen the project's coalition. The project creates advocacy materials and works with political leaders and leaders in the media to highlight violence issues.

Program Long-Term Success:

In 2008, PAHEF made a total of 35 grants for health projects helping to improve the health of people in 18 countries in the Americas.
