Mission Statement
Our mission at DSAH, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is to create awareness and acceptance of children and adults with Down syndrome through advocacy, socialization, education, and medical outreach.

DSAH serves as a second home to many families in the Houston and surrounding areas. Our goal is to educate our families on how to advocate for their children with DS as well as provide the necessary programs to fulfill the needs of our community.

Program Description:
DSAH's Executive Director, a mom of a child with Down syndrome personally delivers New Baby Gift Baskets to those families who are giving birth to babies with Down syndrome in the Houston and surrounding areas. The baskets are delivered to the hospitals before the baby is discharged and it comes with lots of information on DS, baby items. Our goal is to let the parent know that they are not alone and that others have traveled the path they are ready to go through...

Smart Start - Send your child off to kindergarten confidently!

Program Description:
Entering kindergarten is a critical transition for both children and parents. The Smart Start program is for you if you have asked yourself any of the following questions:
- Will my child be safe?
- Will my child be included?
- Will my child have friends?
- Will my child succeed?
Parents often worry about whether their child is ready for kindergarten and wonder how to best prepare. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about local resources, and to meet other parents whose children are also preparing to enter kindergarten. You will better understand what successful students with Down syndrome have in common.
Session 1- January 21: Student Readiness – potty training, high expectations, following rules and directions, handling schedule changes, insistence on compliance
Session 2 – March 31: Parent/School Relations – communicating effectively, common mistakes, addressing concerns, what your teacher needs to know
Session 3 – May 19: Placements & IEP’s – state assessments, IQ testing, inclusion, Individual Education Plans, creating IEP goals)
Session 4 – July 21: Fostering Friendships -social skills for success, creating social opportunities, successful play dates, community activities, peer presentations

Program Description:
The Down Syndrome Association of Houston (
www.dsah.org) services members in Houston and all the surrounding communities. DSAH understands that people in each community need to have a way to reach out to others within their local area, for friendships, support, playdates, and to share information that is pertinent to that area. In respond to the need, DSAH is forming various Community Groups in our Area. Our current groups as of April 2012 are:

Funding Needs
The DSAH is funded by generous donations from our supporters via specific events such as the Buddy Walk or by general monetary donations. The needs for funding for our programs are very high since we are committed to help our members live fulfilling and enriched lifes.
