Impact Statement

  1. EACF assists on average 500 persons with epilepsy a month in securing diagnosis, medical treatment, and case management so they may take/maintain their place in society as productive citizens.
  2. In addition, thousands more each month receive our message on epilepsy education/prevention and head injury (leading cause of epilepsy) protection to reduce acquired forms of it.
  3. EACF’s case management and medical services alone save Central Florida area hospitals over $30,000,000 a year in needless emergency room visits by giving persons with epilepsy, that have no medical coverage, a place to turn.
  4. EACF has given away over 50,000 free bicycle helmets to needy children in our effort to prevent acquired forms of epilepsy through head trauma.
  5. EACF is also one of the nation’s leaders in the prevention and education of Shaken Baby Impact Syndrome (SBIS), another severe form of head injury. Our program has grown nationwide with over 25,000 of our teaching curriculum and SBIS videos in use including schools, childcare workers, the U.S. Navy, hospitals and much more.

EACF partners with; area physicians, laboratories, diagnostic centers, hospitals and more, either free or at deep discounts, in order for us to serve our clients with those services and more, for less than $700 per year per client.  According to Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) one hospital admission can be over $27,000 with an average emergency room visit costing over $2,000.

EACF keeps or returns hundreds of individuals with epilepsy in school or the workforce by giving them somewhere to come for understanding, diagnosis, medical care, seizure control, case management, comprehensive epilepsy education, and much more.

These are just a few ways EACF impacts our community.

Some of our goals were realized already.  EACF was donated a building saving us over $3,500 a month that would have gone to rent that will now go toward direct services.  We have also been given our own EEG machine and two ambulatory EEG units in order to have our own EEG diagnostic laboratory saving us thousands of dollars a year and allowing us to serve more people with more tests.

Our continued goal for 2011 is to find innovative ways to provide high quality services at lower costs and meet the increasing demand from persons needing our services while reducing our waiting lists for those wanting to get into the program.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

Our future at EACF is very bright and we remain Central Florida's only 501 (c) (3) agency in epilepsy services. In 2010 we were donated a building for our headquarters and the Orlando clinic. This donation alone will save us tens of thousand's of dollars a year in rent that we can now use for patient care and other services.

EACF has collaborated to streamline administrative functions and be more cost effective/efficient in order to serve more clients. A multi-lingual central intake center, standardized services, was implemented to serve more Floridians with epilepsy, we can reach thousands more with our new online Epilepsy U (you) featuring webcasts, education for consumers and professionals, educational games for kids and teens, with a contained social networking platform for persons affected by epilepsy and who have similar needs.

EACF has been working with the University of Central Florida Medical School Department of Neurology developing a working relationship for both clinical and educational components.  We also implemented
consultation services and diagnostics with Orlando Health and their epileptologist.

In addition, our volunteers, community support, and diversity continue to grow.  We are proud of our past, present, and look forward to an exciting future.

Over 350,000 Floridians live with epilepsy and hundreds of thousands more are touched by it every day searching for answers to their questions, seeking information and education on our nation’s number one neurologic disorder, finding support, and looking for others just got easier.

Developed in 2011 and maintained by the Epilepsy Association of Central Florida, www.EpilepsyU.com is a new online resource that not only offers information and epilepsy education, but is a “Community” for contacts, socialization, support, webinars, online presentations, schedule of events, and much more for families and persons affected by epilepsy. EpilepsyU was uniquely designed and can be customized to meet personal needs.   Membership in the “U” not only has Members from around Florida but from many other states and internationally including the U.K and New Zealand.

2010-2011’s development budget was $86,000. In 2011-2012 we have budgeted $106,000 to expand this one-of-a-kind, unique program and expand our reach far beyond our current education and support services. EACF is seeking sponsors, grantors, and advertisers to help support this activity.

Funding Needs

Epilepsy is the nation’s number one neurological disorder affecting nearly 1 out of every 26 Americans, with over 50,000 persons with epilepsy living in the tri-county area.  According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke more people have epilepsy than multiple sclerosis, muscular dystropy, cerebral palsy, alzheimer's and active cancer COMBINED.  Children and the elderly make up the largest number of new diagnosis with a higher incidence among African Americans and Hispanics.  In addition there is a higher incidence of school dropout, teenage suicide and unemployment among those with epilepsy.
Therefore the economic burden on the community of someone with epilepsy going untreated/uncontrolled is huge.

In response, EACF works hard to take a holistic approach to serving our clients needs; not only medical and support, but assisting them with finding food, housing, employment, psychological support and more.
EACF continually seeks additional partners to help in this mission.  Physicians, diagnostic services, EEG technicians, inexpensive medication access, providers of psychological services, and laboratory services are always needed to meet the growing requests for services. Donations of time, talent, and money are always in demand.

We continually have a waiting list to get into our program.  There is a tremendous need to open a pediatric epilepsy clinic.  Even children with Medicaid have nowhere to go for specialized epilepsy care.  EACF would need an additional $100,000 a year to support it.  Individual donations and grants can provide:
  • $5 can provide a Shaken Baby Video
  • $7 for a bicycle helmet to a needy child to prevent head trauma,
  • $20 for a laboratory test,
  • $75 for a EEG,
  • $45 for a visit with a neurologist,
  • $300 for a MRI,
  • $500 can send a child to epilepsy camp.
