Mission Statement
United Way leads the way to solutions for a better community.
We accomplish this by:
- Providing community leadership.
- Developing solutions.
- Raising and leveraging funds for impact.
United Way advances the common good by focusing on the building blocks of a good life: education, income and health. Quality education, so our children can succeed in school, graduate and achieve their potential. Enough income so families and individuals are financially stable. And good health, especially for our older adults and their caregivers.
United Way creates lasting change by bringing together people and organizations to tackle community issues and invest in proven solutions. Through United Way, the 1 million residents of the Richmond-Petersburg region have the opportunity to give, advocate and volunteer. That's what it means to Live United.

Impact Statement
Education: Your support provides opportunities for at-risk children and families. For example:
- Almost 4,000 children received quality child care and home visiting services last year through United Way-funded programs.
- Last year, 10,000 students earned better grades and spent more time in school thanks to Communities in Schools, a United Way-supported program.
- In May 2010, Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, an initiative to prepare all children to succeed in school and in life that is facilitated by United Way and the Greater Richmond Chamber, launched the Regional Plan for Children's School Readiness. More than 100 public and private organizations are putting the five-year action plan in motion.
Income: Your contribution provides resources to help our neighbors meet basic needs. For example:
- More than 36,000 people became financially stable through access to job training, housing assistance and emergency shelter at United Way-funded programs last year.
- More than 10,000 people were able to stay in their homes after receiving emergency financial assistance through United Way-funded programs last year.
- United Way is a partner in MetroCASH, the Greater Richmond Earned Income Tax Coalition. Partners promote free tax preparation services for those in need and help people claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. For the 2009 filing season, MetroCASH filed almost 1,800 returns that brought more than $1.8 million into the community.
Health: Your gift to United Way provides essential support to older adults and their caregivers. For example:
- More than 1,700 vulnerable older adults received assistance at home and through adult day care services last year at United Way-funded programs.
- United Way, in partnership with Senior Connections Capital Area Agency on Aging, is leading the Greater Richmond Age Wave Planning effort. The coalition is working to prepare our region to meet the demand for resources that will come as Baby Boomers age.

Program Description:
United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community to advance the common good. We focus on the building blocks of a good life:
- Education: Helping children and youth achieve their potential.
- Income: Helping families and individuals achieve financial stability and stable housing.
- Health: Supporting the health and wellness of older adults and their caregivers.
United Way provides long-term funding, technical assistance, and support to a strong portfolio of more than 90 effective programs at 50 partner agencies that are meeting high priority needs in these goal areas. For many of these programs, United Way is the only stable source of funding, as their government and foundation grants fluctuate from year to year.
United Way has a significant research and community planning function and regularly conducts and collaborates on community initiatives. This information is used to set priorities for program funding and community problem-solving activities. Initiatives led by United Way include:
-
Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond: a regional coalition of local public and private organizations, businesses, and citizens working together to ensure that the region’s children enter school healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed in school and in life. The coalition is facilitated by United Way and the Greater Richmond Chamber.
-
Partnership for Out of School Time (POST): working to ensure that our region’s youth have access to high quality out of school activities.
-
The Greater Richmond Age Wave Planning effort: a coalition of public and private organizations, businesses, and citizens working together to ensure that the region is Age Wave Prepared.
Program Long-Term Success:
United Way is working to create a region where all young children are healthy and well-cared for. A region where all children are able to read, where all youth have safe places to spend their time outside of school, and where all teenagers graduate from high school. A region where all families can make ends meet and every family has housing. A region where all aging adults are active, engaged in the community, and remain in their homes as they grow older. This vision is coming to life through our community's support for United Way.
Program Short-Term Success:
During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, United Way:
- Maintained outcome-focused funding to 90 high-priority, effective programs, serving more than 200,000 people in the Richmond-Petersburg region.
- Responded to 21,544 phone calls to the Information & Referral Center, reached by dialing 2-1-1. The Center links people in need with organizations that provide assistance. Almost half of those callers were seeking financial assistance.
- Staffed the Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond initiative, launched the initiative's Regional Plan for Children's School Readiness, and began the implementation of the five-year action plan.
- Raised more than $17 million in total revenue. While United Way is best known for our community-wide fund drive each fall, we also work to generate additional revenue year-round from grants, special gifts, and other sources in order to better meet the pressing needs in our community.
Program Success Monitored by:
United Way is the region's leader in implementing and teaching effective use of outcome-based planning and evaluation. All programs funded by United Way submit outcome results annually. Similarly, initiatives implemented by United Way are outcome-focused and thoroughly evaluated based on both outcomes and results.
United Way also has the most thorough research abilities of all charities in our region. Our annual "Indicators of Community Strength" report shows our community's most critical needs and determines the best programs and initiatives to effectively meet those needs.
Program Success Examples:
Zoe and Marcus learn together: When Zoe enrolled in Healthy Families Petersburg, she was a brand-new single mom who had grown up in poverty. The home-visiting program, funded by United Way, taught her how to improve their lives. Zoe now enjoys reading to her son, Marcus, and finds creative ways for them to play. She also found a job and graduated from nursing school.
A stable life for Dianne: Dianne lived on the streets and dealt with violence before she arrived at the Espigh Family Shelter at HomeAgain. The United Way-funded program helped her put her life back together, move to transitional housing, and start working for HomeAgain.
Jim's brighter days: Jim has something to wake up for every day — his visits to the Adult Day Services program at Hanover Adult Center. He has flourished at the United Way-funded program, and his happiness is evident to his family. More importantly, the program staff’s attentiveness ensured that Jim received an important cancer diagnosis.
