Mission Statement

Manchester Youth Development Center is committed to nurturing the development of children by meeting their academic, social, and emotional needs within a constructive, wholesome, and safe learning environment which places value on making positive choices as a foundation for building a productive life.

Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC) assists each child to realize his or her potential in an atmosphere that considers individual needs. Its sole purpose is to assist parents and caregivers with total development of their children. Since 1968, MYDC has developed into a 3-tiered program:

Training Wheels - a private, multi-cultural nursery school.

After School Program - a researched-based curriculum in math, reading, and science in addition to complementary recreational activities, social development-focused activities, and wellness activities.

Summer Program - a six-week, research-based curriculum in math, reading, and science, as well as recreational activities meeting the needs of the whole child.

The Center is a place where children grow, learn, and explore in a safe and nurturing environment. With this support, young people can develop self-assurance in the four areas that are key to creating a happy, healthy, and successful life: sense of competence, sense of usefulness, sense of belonging, and sense of power. Simultaneously, MYDC has become a vehicle for parents to dialogue with teachers and other parents about relevant aspects of their children’s total development.

Impact Statement

During the 2009-2010 academic year, MYDC has successfully piloted a Saturday Enrichment program for community youth. The Saturday Enrichment Program was initiated in January 2010 and is a 4 hour, drop-in program for grades 1-12 youth. It served approximately 90 youth each week and offers activities that promote academic achievement, provide a safe and nurturing environment, and offer engaging and positive alternatives during free time.

MYDC developed a Math Improvement Program to support teachers and students in 3rd - 5th grade to ensure that at least 75% of the children are meeting or exceeding appropriate achievement levels in math for their grade. This program initiated in January 2010 and is funded through June 2011.

MYDC received and  implemented a grant to enhance the after school drama and arts program. This enrichment activity provided a structured, creative outlet for numerous after school children.

MYDC's 6-week, summer program served nearly 150, K-8 children and employed 10-15 high school students. The summer program provides supervised, recreational and learning opportunities for Manchester and surrounding communities youth, extending their school year and providing a safe place for recreational activities and additional learning opportunities.

Program Description:

MYDC recognizes the need to provide the youth of Manchester with safe options on the weekends as alternatives to “hanging out” and being on the streets. The Manchester community has a scarcity of recreational and educational activities accessible to the local community. MYDC’s Saturday Enrichment Program provides youth grades 1-12 with a safe place for growth through recreational, wellness, and educational activities in a supervised, accessible, and convenient setting.

The primary goal of MYDC’s Saturday Enrichment Program is to offer neighborhood youth, opportunities to learn, create, exercise, and socialize in a safe, familiar, and convenient location. Saturday Enrichment Program objectives include:
  • meet the educational needs of children and the community,
  • engage youth in constructive activities that contribute to their well-being,
  • enhance the vitality of the Manchester community, and
  • extend support to parents in the Manchester and North Side communities.

Funding Needs

In the upcoming year, MYDC seeks to enhance the after school enrichment program and continue to broaden academic and recreational activities for children participating in the after school program. One example is to develop an African American history component into after school activities.

MYDC will work with Pittsburgh Public Schools on a comprehensive evaluation of PPS students in MYDC's after school program. This evaluation will lead to an alignment of after school program with PPS goals to help prepare more Pittsburgh Promise-ready students. In addition, MYDC will work to better align the Training Wheels pre-school curriculum (literacy, math, and foreign language/Spanish) with the K-8 curriculum.

Finally, MYDC plans to fully implement a year-round, Saturday program for the community. This youth development program will include academic, recreational, and learning opportunities for youth, with separate programming opportunities for adults.
