Mission Statement
The mission of Animal Loving Friends is to provide assistance to free-roaming and unwanted animals, and end overpopulation. We accomplish this by providing TNR (trap, neuter, return) and lifelong care to feral cats, and educating the public on the importance of spaying and neutering, and the care of, their pets and free-roaming animals.

Impact Statement
Animal Loving Friends has been involved, either independently or in cooperation with others, in the rescue and placement of hundreds of unwanted and abandoned pets. We've grown from 4 volunteers to 11, and continually add new feral cat colonies, providing care for nearly 200 homeless community cats. We launched our signature Spay One Stray campaign, which has influenced our visitors and volunteers to spay and neuter more than 400 animals. Combined, more than 3800 births have been prevented in the first year following sterilization, and nearly 90 million over the next 7 years (according to estimates by the HSUS). We care for several extreme special needs animals who suffered spinal injuries, paralysis, cancer, and other debilitating conditions. We've placed dozens of informative articles and resources on our website, and after several years of operating out of our own pockets, have finally achieved non-profit status as an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charity.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:
I think what makes our group unique is that our
work is a true labor of love. Most of the animals we help literally come from
the street, often in the cruddiest parts of town, where few humans choose to be.
They are the product of irresponsible owners, and the disposable society that we
live in today. The life of every animal is important to us. While we know that
with only a handful of people we can't save them all, it still haunts us to see
a cat trying to find food from a dumpster, water from a drip line or leaky
faucet, and shade under a creosote bush. We've spent countless hours on our
hands and knees, in the desert environment, among insects, reptiles, rodents and
skunks, cactus and rocks - just to save the life of one cat or a litter of
kittens tucked away under debris. We don't think about whether we have enough
donations to cover the expenses. We've charged thousands to our personal credit
cards, knowing that we won't recuperate those costs. Every expense is measured
in terms of the number of lives that money might save. I can't tell you the
number of times one of us has said, "That's a litter of kittens!" when trying to
justify a $500 expense, instead looking for another, less costly way to fill the
need. This is the primary reason we have only recently obtained non-profit
status, because when faced with the choice of filing fees or veterinary care for
a sick or injured animal, we help the animal every time. I'm very proud of what
we've done with so few of us, and at our average age of over 50.

Program:
Spay One Stray
- Budget:
-
$500
- Category:
-
Animal-Related
- Population Served:
-
General Public/Unspecified
Program Description:
Invitation to every visitor to make it their personal mission to Spay just One Stray Cat. We ask that you save JUST ONE life, and prevent that cat from breeding. One unaltered
cat and her offspring can produce up to 420,000 cats in just seven years (according to the HSUS)! We know that JUST ONE PERSON can make a world of difference for their neighbors and for the cats. You don't have to make it a life-long commitment.
JUST SAVE ONE and provide it food for life. Then share your success story with us, and we'll publish your name on our SOS page.
Program Long-Term Success:
An End to animal overpopulation and the practice of killing homeless animals in shelters.
Program Short-Term Success:
Ending behaviors associated with unaltered cats: yowling, spraying, fighting, digging through garbage.
Program Success Monitored by:
Participants email their stories, we publish their names and the statistics for the program, on our website.
Program Success Examples:
In the first year our visitors reported 69 cats have been sterilized as a result of reading about our campaign. According to HSUS reports on the rate of reproduction, and taking into account the rate of mortality for free-roaming cats, more than 14 million new births of unwanted, homeless cats, have been prevented over the next seven years.
