The mission of AFDN is to assist African immigrant families with economic, social development, education, health and well-being of our African communities.

Impact Statement

Criteria for Success 1. AFDN will increase outreach and program participation in our housing workshops. 2. Program participants will understand the processes and preparation needed to buy a home. 3. Program participants will create a plan to achieve the goal of home ownership. 4. Qualified program participants will successfully locate and purchase a home. Measurements 1. AFDN will track program participation and follow-up assistance needed and obtained through AFDN or through the community. 2. Staff will record intake data relevant to the programming. Example: number of participants, country of origin, home ownership upon program completion and follow-up requests. 3. AFDN will track program interest generated from outreach activities by AFDN. 4. Staff will increase outreach efforts leading to increased program participation a. Develop supportive marketing and collateral materials for distribution b. Create a public relations and marketing plan c. Implement the plans 5. Staff will ensure the website is up to date and accurately represents programmatic efforts and accomplishments Data Evaluation and Results All data collected will be used to better programming and outreach and to assist African refugees and immigrants to Minnesota to set and achieve their personal homeownership goals. Long-term funding Strategies AFDN is committed to developing relationships with local foundations, businesses and corporations to ensure our success and growth of our efforts to assist African refugees and immigrants become successful members of Minnesotan social and economic structures.

Chief Executive Profile:

Mr. Mohamod attained his degree in Civil Engineering from Somali University in Mogadishu, Somalia.  As a member of the Twin Cities community he has helped many members of this community learn about home-ownership and for many of them he has helped them purchase their first home as a real estate agent.  Since 2008 he assisted in the creation of African Families Development Network to make home-ownership and education possible for African immigrants and refugees whose need have not been met in this area.  His experience includes: volunteer training and co-ordination, leadership and management, and program development and non-government organization.

Program Description:

In mid-2009, AFDN launched its first programming area to begin serving the needs of African refugee and immigrant families by addressing the desire to obtain permanent housing in the community.

Program Long-Term Success:

Our long term success will be evident as our programs graduate future homeowners who will exhibit what they have learned by maintaining their investment and building value in their home, neighborhood and community.

Program Short-Term Success:

Our short term success is to complete 2 home-ownership workshops of 20 students per session by December 31, 2010.

Program Success Monitored by:

Will we know that we have succeeded when 50% of our students successful purchase their homes after completion of our workshops.

Program Success Examples:

During the period of January - March 2010, 3 workshops were held, 30 individuals completed the program and 10 successfully purchased home.

Program Description:

AFDN recognizes the needs of families as the first and second generation as they adapt to American culture and structures. Navigating and succeeding in the American education system is proving to be a challenge for many of the families in our community. To address this need, AFDN offers tutoring by four Somali Educators from area public schools to assist youth in grades K-12. This educational offering is currently provided by request. 

Program Long-Term Success:

Our long term successes when materialize as students complete programs like our A+ Certification and are employed in the IT area, when our tutored students' reflect an improvement in their grades and self esteem.

Program Short-Term Success:

We wish to expand attendance of our courses by 50% and accomplish 75% to 100% job placement for those who complete our certification programs.

The past year 3 students complete our math course, 1 student completed our English course, 1 student completed our ESL course and 1 student completed our Social Studies course.

Program Description:

AFDN currently provides basketball instruction and teams with tournament play offered year round and with meals provided Monday-Friday to young adults aged 18-21 at a variety of locations in the Twin Cities. As our Fitness Programming grows, we intend to expand our reach to youth and their families and to provide separate, culturally appropriate instruction for girls and young women. In 2009, 45 young adults participated in our Basketball and meals programming and already 50 have participated (in the first three months) of 2010.  

Program Long-Term Success:

Our long term success for our recreation program is to introduce other popular sports programs as well as continue our basketball program so that our constituents can experience sports activities that they may not have had the opportunity to do.

Program Short-Term Success:

We would like to increase the number of participants by 50% in our basketball program.

Program Success Monitored by:

This season we had 45 adolescent males take part in our basketball program.  This was a very successful turnout.

Program Success Examples:

Primarily low-income residents, to remain in their homes and encourage them to take an active role in the administration of their homes.


Funding Needs

Funds will help cover the cost of the facility, office supplies and the salaries of the instructors when pooled with other grants and donations.


Volunteer Needs

Office help to be able during the regular work day (Monday through Friday). They would answer phones and take messages.

We would be more than happy to accept all in-kind donations.

Generations Online comes to the Cedar Avenue Area.

In partnership with Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis, AFDN will now be holding classes for senior who want to learn the Internet.  They will learn how to "surf" the web, open and send emails to friends and loved one.  This program is part of the Digital Inclusion Fund.
 
All seniors over 50 years are welcomed.  And special exceptions will be reviewed for those under 50.  Sessions run from10:30am until 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.  4 seats are available daily.  Please call 612 724-0000 to learn more.
