Funding Needs

Athletes Without Limits recruits and manages TEAM USA for the International Paralympic Committee-sanctioned INAS Global Games World Champsionships for para athletes with intellectual disability. We currently seek funding to support the team as our athletes (unlike other national team athletes) must pay travel and registration fees out-of-pocket. Total cost for the US Team to participate is currently at $35,000-$50,000, which is currently paid for personally by the coaches, athletes and parents.

Volunteer Needs

Request for In-Kind Contributions

Athletes Without Limits recruits and manages TEAM USA for the International Paralympic Committee-sanctioned INAS Global Games World Champsionships for para athletes with intellectual disability.
We currently seek in-kind sponsors to provide the following:
  • USA paraphernalia (flags, pins, keychains) to trade with the other 1,500 athletes from over 30 countries at the Games.
  • 14 Filtered water bottles (preferably in USA colors) so athletes and coaches always have access to water while travelling.
  • Video camera's for each of the 7 athletes to use to record their experience at the games.
  • Shoes: Athletic slides for the 7 athletes, running shoes for the 3 runners.
Please contact us at info@athleteswithoutlimits.org if you would like to support TEAM USA as in in-kind sponsor.

News

Michael Murray is the first US athlete with intellectual disability to compete in a Paralympic World Championship in over a decade.
January 27, 2011
Athletes Without Limits' Michael Murray made history on January 27, 2011 as the first athlete with an intellectual disability to make the US Paralympic Team competing in a world championship. Michael achieved a top 13 world ranking when he competed in the Men's T20 1500m event at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.
International vote passes to re-include class for athletes with intellectual disability in Paralympics. Athletes Without Limits is excited to support US athletes who set their sites on competing in Paralympic competition.
November 21, 2009
On November 21 a majority of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) membership decided in favor of the re-inclusion of athletes with an intellectual disability in competitions, including the Paralympics. This important decision restores the Olympic dream to these athletes for the first time since the Sydney 2000 Games. Read the full IPC press release.

Four sports likely to include classification for athletes with intellectual disability at 2012 Games. At this time it is likely that the following four sports will have eligibility processes in place in time to reinclude athletes with intellectual disability in time for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. This will be confirmed by Autumn 2010 (early 2011 for Athletics). In addition, there may be opportunities for athletes to participate in world championship IPC events starting in 2010. These will be posted in our events category by sport.

  1. Swimming (IPC)
  2. Athletics (Track & Field) (IPC)
  3. Rowing (FISA)
  4. Table Tennis (ITTF)

First steps for interested US athletes is to work with Athletes Without Limits to complete the INAS-FID eligibility application. According to the IPC, the first step athletes should take toward Paralympic classification is to register with their INAS-FID member organization (in the US this is Athletes Without Limits) by completing the INAS-FID Eligibility application.
