Program:
Sustainable Jatropha (Biofuel) Farming for Economic Development
- Budget:
-
$70,000
- Category:
-
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
- Population Served:
-
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Program Description:
Jatropha is a non-edible, drought resistant plant yielding oil rich seeds. Extraction of Jatropha oil is a simple process, and the oil needs no further refining for use in generators and older diesel engines. Byproducts of the process are nitrogen rich fertilizer and a charcoal substitute, both are in high demand in rural Haiti.
Farmers are taught to integrate or border crop Jatropha without displacing any food production. Seed sales to Sirona will supplement their farming income, and profits from oil sales (either in-country or by export) will be reinvested into this project and community development and infrastructure. This project will directly impact the livliehood of 450 farmers and their families and have broader impact as reaped harvests provide fuel and sustainable revenue for their communities.
Program costs are for seeds, nursery set-up, Agronomy training and oversight expenses.

- Category:
-
Community, Business & Industry
- Population Served:
-
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Program Description:
Wild Jatropha grows throughout Haiti and by crushing the oil rich seeds of this plant people can obtain a biofuel so pure that no further refinement is necessary to run generators or other diesel engines.
This program seeks to purchase and run a Mobile Crushing Unit that can be carried to various communities and purchases of wild Jatropha seeds can begin providing sustainable income for community development projects.
Project expenses are for equipment and shipping fees associated with the press; salaries to in-country workers who will run the press and the collection processes. Sales of oil and by-products (fertilizer and charcoal substitute) will also provide local revenue streams.

Rebuild Mission of Hope School
- Budget:
-
$25,000
- Category:
-
Education
- Population Served:
-
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Program Description:
Mission of Hope in Grand Goave operates an award winning school open to the poorest of the poor. Few schools are free in Haiti, and this institution is critical to more than 500 students. The school collapsed during the earthquake in January of 2010 and building a new structure is critical to the community.
We are partnering with Extollo International to build a new earthquake and hurricane resistant structure. Extollo teaches Haitians safe building practices and uses projects like the Mission of Hope school as training opportunities for their students.

$2,000
- Category:

Education
- Population Served:
-
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Program Description:
Often it is the cost of a uniform ($15) which keeps children from attending school in Haiti. Sirona Cares has identified through our partners 100 children needing uniforms and supplies for school this year. We are seeking funding to allow these children to attend school, and to supply needed essentials to teachers of rural schools.

Support of Orphanages
- Budget:
-
$3,600
- Category:
-
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
- Population Served:
-
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Program Description:
The number of orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti is difficult to calculate. In our experience the number is very high, and those caring for orphans often have scant resources to do so. We have partnered with the Haitian Health Foundation to procure locally grown food and supply it to orphanages in Jeremie, Haiti. The impact of this project is two-fold: orphans receive the food that they desperately need, and local economics are supported as farmers incomes improve.
