Impact Statement

We launched our Jatropha (biofuel) farming program for economic development in rural Haiti.  Sirona Cares' provides seeds, nursery set-up and local Agronomy expertise; local farmers invest through maintenance of the seedlings.  At harvest Sirona guarantees purchase of farmers' seeds for local fuel production; all profits are re-invested in community development projects.
  • We have planted four nurseries and successfully transferred seedlings to 18 fields.
  • We enrolled over 400 farmers and have trained 25% of those enrolled on care, maintenance and the priority of food security.
In addition we support the care and education of children.
  • Sirona has reversed malnutrition symptoms in over 2000 children through introduction of a Moringa education program
  • We distributed earthquake relief goods to over 20,000 people
  • We coordinated delivery of computers for a technology center in a rural school.
Future goals include expansion of our farming project, rebuilding schools and orphanages and continued work on malnutrition and childhood diarrhea

Chief Executive

Mrs. Michelle Lacourciere

Term:

Since Jan 2009

Chief Executive Profile:

I received my BA in Political, Legal and Economic Analysis from Mills College in 1990.  I have put that education to good use as my husband Paul and I created the original vision of Sirona Cares.  I have been implementing our project in Haiti since January of 2009.  Although I entered the field of International Development a newcomer in one of the most difficult countries to work in, Haiti,  I have traveled to Haiti every other month and learned a great deal on the ground.  I have built a strong network of in-country partners as well as a strong network of supporters in the United States.  I strongly believe that it is possible to change the future through our work, and I am committed to working not only in Haiti, but bringing our program to other countries as we grow.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

Once your eyes are open to the disparity in this world, it's hard to see anything the same.  Through working to make a difference for the poorest of the poor, I have felt more joy than at any other time in my life.  It is my goal to provide complete transparency in our work, and give others satisfaction through assurance that their donation created it's highest possible impact.  Change is possible, and more possible through sustainable development than charity alone.  Please consider joining us in this remarkable project.

Program: Sustainable Jatropha (Biofuel) Farming for Economic Development

Budget:
$70,000
Category:
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Jatropha is a non-edible, drought resistant plant yielding oil rich seeds.  Extraction of Jatropha oil is a simple process, and the oil needs no further refining for use in generators and older diesel engines.  Byproducts of the process are nitrogen rich fertilizer and a charcoal substitute, both are in high demand in rural Haiti.

Farmers are taught to integrate or border crop Jatropha without displacing any food production.  Seed sales to Sirona will supplement their farming income, and profits from oil sales (either in-country or by export) will be reinvested into this project and community development and infrastructure.  This project will directly impact the livliehood of 450 farmers and their families and have broader impact as reaped harvests provide fuel and sustainable revenue for their communities.

Program costs are for seeds, nursery set-up, Agronomy training and oversight expenses.

Program: Installation of Mobile Crushing Unit

Budget:
$30,000
Category:
Community, Business & Industry
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Wild Jatropha grows throughout Haiti and by crushing the oil rich seeds of this plant people can obtain a biofuel so pure that no further refinement is necessary to run generators or other diesel engines.

This program seeks to purchase and run a Mobile Crushing Unit that can be carried to various communities and purchases of wild Jatropha seeds can begin providing sustainable income for community development projects.

Project expenses are for equipment and shipping fees associated with the press; salaries to in-country workers who will run the press and the collection processes.  Sales of oil and by-products (fertilizer and charcoal substitute) will also provide local revenue streams.

Program: Rebuild Mission of Hope School

Budget:
$25,000
Category:
Education
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

Mission of Hope in Grand Goave operates an award winning school open to the poorest of the poor.  Few schools are free in Haiti, and this institution is critical to more than 500 students.  The school collapsed during the earthquake in January of 2010 and building a new structure is critical to the community.

We are partnering with Extollo International to build a new earthquake and hurricane resistant structure.  Extollo teaches Haitians safe building practices and uses projects like the Mission of Hope school as training opportunities for their students.

Program: School Supplies for Haiti's Poorest Children

Budget:
$2,000
Category:
Education
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Often it is the cost of a uniform ($15) which keeps children from attending school in Haiti.  Sirona Cares has identified through our partners 100 children needing uniforms and supplies for school this year.  We are seeking funding to allow these children to attend school, and to supply needed essentials to teachers of rural schools.

Program: Support of Orphanages

Budget:
$3,600
Category:
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

The number of orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti is difficult to calculate.  In our experience the number is very high, and those caring for orphans often have scant resources to do so.  We have partnered with the Haitian Health Foundation to procure locally grown food and supply it to orphanages in Jeremie, Haiti.  The impact of this project is two-fold: orphans receive the food that they desperately need, and local economics are supported as farmers incomes improve.

Funding Needs

Our budget for 2011 is set at $130,000.  This figure will cover the planting of 250,000 Jatropha Trees (nursery, training, equipment); installation of a mobile crushing unit to press seed and extract Jatropha oil for use in generators; rebuilding of the Mission of Hope School in Grand Goave, Haiti, and advocacy work for children focused upon health, nutrition and education.

Volunteer Needs

We will be looking for interns next summer who can spend time in Haiti with our farmers evaluating the progress of our project.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

Currently we have assistance with web design, and we will need assistance with updates once the site is up.  We also need donations of air miles to offset our travel expenses.
