Mom, Dad, you grandchild has…..
How to talk to your family and friends about your special needs child

Talking with your family about your special needs child can be a scary thing at first. It is important that parents make sure family and friends feel informed, included and empowered but you don’t’ know how.   Some are afraid of how family will receive the news, and how it will affect their relationship going forward.   This course will help you know what to say and how to handle some common questions and concerns.

Creating your support team…..

Having a network of professionals and friends you can count on for both expertise and support is the key to success in raising a child with special needs. When you have built a network of people who you feel comfortable depending on for advice and services life gets a whole lot easier!   This course will walk you through developing your team and acting as a great team captain!

Microboards answer the question - “What will happen to my child when I am no longer around?” and then some!

All of us want to envision a life of joy and possibility for our kids. We want to know that when they grow up they can continue into adulthood and be self sufficient. I don’t know about you, but before I learned about Microboards, I would look at my non-verbal, wheelchair bound daughter and could not imagine how that would happen.   Now I know that by creating a Microboard, she will not only be taken care of but she’ll lead a safe and happy life that she is in control of! In this course you will learn about what a Microboard is, why you would put on in place, and how it will benefit your child and ease your mind!

Advocating for your child at school…..

Do you feel like the educational system is always against you as it relates to your child? It’s a struggle we all face, but it can be easier and more pleasant if you just know how to navigate the system. We’ll talk about what the law actually says, how it applies to you and how to make it work for your child!

Overview of Medicaid Waiver programs…. (Texas Specific)

There are quite a few Medicaid Waiver programs in Texas. These programs are very beneficial finically for those who are on them, but how do you know which ones apply to your child? We will take a look at all the programs, what they cover, who they serve and how to apply for them. Most of these have waiting lists that go on for years, so it is important to get on the list as soon as possible!

Taking a break! How to find respite options ….

The ability to leave your child with someone else for a while so you can decompress and recharge your batteries is extremely important to successful parenting. Having a child with special needs makes that even more important and even more challenging. This course will identify how to find respite programs, what to look for in a babysitter, and how to make sure your child is safe in their care.
