Chief Executive

Mr Harlan Douglas Weikle

Term:

Since May 2009

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

For Paws Hospice is a idea that sprang from our experience with human hospice. For Paws provides support to families struggling to care for their pets either financially or emotionally.

Just as human hospice marshals a community of professionals and volunteers to assist families in home, For Paws Hospice provides a community of pet care professionals to assist pet families.

As director I recognize the unique aspect of this hospice care model; with each client patient we are presented with a different critical need affecting the human animal bond.

When a pet can remain in its home free of pain or fear and cared for by its long time companion, hospice has succeeded in its mission.

Program: Emergency medical assistance

Budget:
$15,000
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

For Paws Hospice contributes grants for emergency veterinary medical care to families or individuals who demonstrate: need, the ability to provide continued medical care for the pet as well as maintain a safe, healthy, happy home environment for the companion animal.

Program Long-Term Success:

Hospice emergency medical grants are designed  to initiate a veterinary relationship before the medical condition of the pet requires emergency care. Veterinary assistance grants may take the form of short term assistance during an emergency or help with an ongoing medical treatment designed to head off an emergency e.g. pre-diabetic testing.

Such assistance may result in two clear benefits: establishment of a routine schedule of veterinary care for a family pet and secondarily the continuation of care when an aging pet companion faces diminished financial resources to care for his or her pet.

This program can have the long term effect of establishing the practice of early onset veterinary care for young families in turn instilling that habit for future generations of pet families.

Program Short-Term Success:

Emergency medical assistance grants promote immediate results when a pet receives necessary medical treatment, the pet's family can meet that need with the aid of a small grant and keep their pet. Finally the community benefits when a pet does not have to be surrendered to animal service providers or simply abandoned.

Program Success Monitored by:

Of the approximately 50 emergency medical grants contributed by For Paws Hospice between Jan. 1st and Aug. 1st, 2010 counselor notes and follow up interviews with clients and medical providers list 39 cases resulting in recovery of the pet from a minor medical condition, 7 cases where treatment is ongoing and 2 cases in which the pet succumbed despite medical treatment efforts.

Program Success Examples:

The Emergency Medical Assistance program has contributed approximately $2500 to since January 2010. The one time grants are limited to $50 or less and are intended to either initiate a veterinary relationship where non had previously existed or to support an ongoing emergency medical treatment where funds are limited.

The result is that more than fifty families have been able to access veterinary care for their pet this year.

Funding Needs

The three active programs which For Paws Hospice ran concurrently through 2010 were: Emergency Medical Grants, All Pets Kitchen Food Bank and Bosco's List for handicapped pet wheelchair donations. Combined cost for these three programs was just over $7000. Income from direct cash donations through PayPal and table donations at events totaled approximately $2300. For Paws anticipates the cost of those three programs will double to $15000 in 2011. For Paws plans to add a fourth program in 2011, The Free Veterinary Clinic for pet of families on welfare and the homeless. Initial start up costs for the Free Clinic are estimated to be $40,000 including licenses, in kind donations, rent, utilities, insurance and supplies. For Paws total projected budget for 2011 is $55,000. A detailed budget for each hospice program is available upon written request to Director, For Paws Hospice, PO Box 6685, Ozona, FL 34660.

Volunteer Needs

Volunteers required: Fund raisers, animal care givers, business managers, grant writers, event planner/coordinator. Each program For Paws Hospice offers requires a contribution of volunteer hours. These hours vary substantially from program to program: All Pets Kitchen represents the least number of hours, for 2010 approximately 36 hours total for collecting, sorting and delivery; we expect that number to double in 2011 to 72 hours. Administration of the Emergency Medical Grants Program and Bosco's List required approximately 150 hours in 2010, again we expect the figure to double for 2011. For Paws Free Clinic Program startup and operations hours for 2011 are hard to anticipate however we have budgeted 600 hours for planning, implementation and operation. The total volunteer hours 2011 are 972 hours.
