CEO/Executive Director Statement:

My Sisters offers a unique and cost-effective solution to the growing need for services to incarcerated women that addresses their extensive victimization history.  One recent study concluded that up to 99% of the women incarcerated are victims of family violence; their victimization histories contribute to drug addiction and crime.  By linking arms with volunteers, we have the opportunity to offer services that will change lives and families.  With the current economic outlook, there are fewer tax-payer dollars available for services to incarcerated women so empowering and equipping volunteers for such service is cost-effective and viable.

Program: Abuse awareness curriculum

Budget:
$20,000
Category:
Crime & Legal
Population Served:
Female Adults
Crime/Abuse Victims
Offenders/Ex-offenders

Program Description:

Our abuse awareness curriculum is specifically designed for survivors of family violence who are incarcerated.  We feel it is necessary to have a curriculum geared to the specific needs of incarcerated survivors because of the re-traumatization that is frequently experienced through incarceration.  The curriculum has been field-tested and continuing to demonstrate effectiveness with incarcerated women.

Program Long-Term Success:

Due to the nature of family violence and its pervasive impact on survivors, it is difficult to access the long-term success of any intervention or program.  Statistically we know that women usually leave violent relationships at least 7 times before they leave for the final time.  Gauging the success of our program will require longitudinal studies to look at recidivism, relapse in substance abuse, and whether the participant continues to experience new victimizing relationships.

Program Short-Term Success:

The initial field test demonstrated effectiveness in relieving some of the stress and distress of the women participating in the study.  A self-efficacy scale was used at the beginning of the program and at the end and continues to demonstrate a greater level of personal empowerment as a result of participation in the program.  Coping mechanisms and resilience also appear to have increased as a result of participation in our program.

Funding Needs

Our need for substantial funding is critical at this juncture.  We have existed to this point because of personal funding by our CEO but need to develop a wider donor base if we are to be effective in meeting our mission statement.

Volunteer Needs

The success of our mission depends on volunteers who will give of their personal time for training and to serve as facilitators in an area correctional facility.
