News

“New Fame for the Everyday Donor,” The New York Times
November 12, 2009
This article highlights the growing significance that smaller donations have in the realm of global aid giving. GlobalGiving is noted as having raised “$22 million since it started in 2002, with an average gift of [only] $54.” The article champions the idea that the “everyday donor is emerging as philanthropy’s newest hero,” and it stresses that organizations such as GlobalGiving are providing channels for these new donors to contribute in significant and meaningful ways.
“Expanding Your Horizons: For Donors Looking to Target Specific Causes Overseas, the Old Standbys Don’t Always do the Trick,” The Wall Street Journal
November 09, 2009
This article focuses on the void which organizations such as GlobalGiving have been able to fill by acting as intermediaries for donors wanting to give internationally. By vetting hundreds of grassroots groups around the world to ensure they meet U.S. tax and antiterrorism rules, GlobalGiving enables donors to easily claim tax deductions on contributions made to the most pressing global causes. Furthermore, donors such as Pandju Merali, a philanthropist who utilizes GlobalGiving’s services to donate to women’s educational initiatives in the developing world, noted in the article that he greatly appreciates the fact that he receives updates from the projects which he is supporting, and he “feels [his] money is going the way [he] wants it to go.”
“Do-It-Yourself Foreign Aid,” The New York Times
August 23, 2009
Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl Wundunn, co-authors of “Half the Sky,” discuss the importance of making aid count by contributing to causes which benefit women. For example, they suggest utilizing the GlobalGiving.org website to “find a woman abroad whose cause you identify with and make a small gift.”
